I may well be but at least here I mean the film I didn't know anything about this film before watching it aside from seeing that it was the usual 'last man alive' setting, and a star cast, which isn't hard when you only have one lead . I'd say the film is worth a watch, its directed well and Will Smith has a lot of experience which always shows in his performances, but its a film that you don't want too think to hard about. It has the usual plot line, man genetically creates cure, cure mutates, most of the population of earth gets mutated to be faster, stronger, more resilient and far more aggressive versions of themselves. But I feel that there was some things that went unexplained, possibly due to their scientific nature and not wanted to alienate possible audiences, like the infected's particular reaction to UV light. But I did enjoy the subtle indication that there may be more to the infected than Robert Neville (Will Smith) assumes, but unfortunately they don't go into it very much in the film. With other subtle hints towards God and self sacrifice that may put some off I would still suggest that is a good film to watch if you can't find any other film you know you'll like, but don't expect the best.

I thought this film was quite poor. Will Smith plays... himself once again, in a poor vesion of the novel I am legend.
There have been 4 films (at least) based on this book, and this is equal worst in my opinion . Will Smith is totally out acted by the dog. The story is disjointed at times, and not enough time is spent on the mutants.
The other films based on this book were The Omega Man (charlton heston), The Last Man on Earth (Vincent Price), and the recent I am Omega (as poor as the Smith film).
I have not read the book so I cannot say which , if any of these films are closest to it - my favourite is The Omega Man - Smith simply doesn't have the presence Heston has - he is stuck playing his fresh prince persona all the time.
If you haven't read the book I would try to do so (I am going to myself). Or get the Heston version .
One for Will Smith fans only.
(or watch The Man from Earth for a quality, low budget independant film, guaranteed free from the idiots at hollywood).

ah now that explains why there was some underlying plot that didn't get revealed in the film, something they could have filled those first 40 minutes with

Yes I have to agree with most of that except Heston having presence Only if dead wood has presence then I could agree!! But The Omega Man was a better film, I had a copy of I Am Legend so was able to fast forward the boring bits.... took about 30 minutes to watch it
edited to say ... Just thinking, if the dead wood was in my way and I tripped on it then it would have presence, so maybe if I tripped over Heston I could agree I think I need a doctor!

I actually really liked this movie, even though it was NOTHING like I expected. It was more of a look at the psychology of being the last guy in the world. I was BAWLING when Sam died, though. And then when Will Smith's character went into the movie store and talked to the mannequins....man, that totally got me.
