Twitter for Beginners « Thread Started on Nov 25, 2011, 5:35pm »
As Facebook self destructs itself by becoming over complicated and making all of the same mistakes that MySpace made. Twitter is quickly emerging as the new number 1 social media site.
Now a lot of people dont get twitter or find it hard to get into it. So thats why this thread has been created. For those who are new to Twitter and want to give it a try but are not really sure how or what to do.
Firstly and this is the most important thing. Start off slowly. The slower you go the easier it is to learn.
Once you have signed up, post your username on this thread, and I will add it to the list below. That way you can start off "Tweeting" with people you already know from this forum.
If once you have created your account, you click on my profile address above, and you can then click "Follow" what this means is that any "Tweets" I post will appear on your homepage when you login. Think of them like status updates on Facebook.
I will also follow you back.
Now anyone who follows you on Twitter will also see your updates/Tweets.
On the homepage under where you can put your own Tweets you will see a list of links something like this
For now you can ignore Activity, Searches and Lists. Timeline is basically everything you Tweet as well as the tweets of anyone you follow.
Only Follow people you are actually interested in, or are friends with. If you follow 100s of people, you can imagine that your timeline is going to be full up of hundreds of Tweets which are impossible to keep up with, hence why I suggested to start slowly, and only follow people you know.
Next on that link of lists you will see the @ symbol followed by your name for example @jondonnis
If you click on this, the screen will change and you will only see Tweets from people who have directly replied to you, or have mentioned you in a tweet. This is the easiest way to communicate with people, as you can see what they have said, click on "Reply" and you can send a tweet back to them.
It is really that simple.
As for what you Tweet about, thats entirely upto you. Some people Tweet about their days, others post links to interesting things they have seen on the web.
You will often see "Hashtags" or the # symbol followed by a word appear on TV shows, for example #imacelebrity or #xfactor.
When you see that you can click on it, and you will then be directed to a page which includes all mentions of that "hashtag" by other Twitter users, regardless of if you follow them or not.
The idea of this is so that if you are watching a TV show you can talk to people about that show, or read other peoples opinions.
Often when something big happens in the news, you will see on the homepage of Twitter a section called Trending. And you will see a "Hashtag" of something, for example when Amy Winehouse died, #amywinehouse was "trending" worldwide.
I know this can all sound complicated, but like i said start off slow, and you will soon pick it up.
Also note the "Tweet" button that appears on every page of the forum. If you make a post or start a thread you like, just click that "Tweet" button a little box will pop up and you can post a link to the thread directly to Twitter.
Any questions ask in this thread.

@diggerdownunder
Have been on for 2 years and only tweeted 84 times :/ mainly because i didn't understand what he hell was going on! It's only recently I found an app on my android phone that simultaneously tweets and facebooks the same thing in one go so that's made it easier to use.
Good guide anyway Jon, I'm sure Barb will find it useful when she creates her own account

Will have to work on my son to see if he will open an account. I think he gave up on me over facebook and the farm thingy. If that fails, will try D-I-L , my E-G-Son is on twitter could give him a try. Do I really want to be on there. Go on, convince me, what are the benefits.

Benefits are Barb that it is the future of social media, and if you start off slowly and follow my guide its good.
When there is a world crisis like what happened in Libya often Twitter is first as people in the actual country are tweeting as it happens. So as a news resource it is unmatched for instantaneous information etc
I've had a twitter account for a while, but never really understood it. Apparently, I've managed to send a message to someone - successfully.

I love that Tom I have not yet attempted a twitter account, I would wonder why anyone would want to hear my daily thoughts...although I am on facebook so probably my friends are reading about some of my thoughts but not daily

Like you Amaris I have no twitter account and really do not see the need for me to have one. Will stay with facebook, I may not post often, but do read it a lot. I was also mistaken into thinking d-i-law and e-g- son where on twitter, they are not.

Amaris, if you follow my guide and start slowly, you will soon pick it up. Also it helps when something interesting happens, or if I need to plug a page here on the forum.
Every time I tweet a link to the forum for a story it ups the hits by about 100!

Slowly getting to grips with Twitter, and it is quite useful. Jon, if I post a message "@whoever", is it right that only that person can read it? Sorry if it is a stupid question.
