Component Missing « Thread Started on Oct 22, 2009, 3:56pm »
My brothers Packard Bell computer keeps coming up with a message saying 'Component missing' when he switches it on and then it dies. He can't even get into a boot from disc screen or anything like that.
Nothing has been done to the machine- any suggestions?

Its a long-shot but how about a systems restore? Go to Accessories, then System Tools, then System Restore - then restore it to a time when the computer was ok, like 2 weeks ago.

hmm. 1. can he get it into the BIOS? 2. does the usual motherboard information appear after he turns it on, then a memory check and a list of devices (hard drives connected etc), (or is it a packard bell splash screen?) and then the component missing message? or does "loading windows" appear then it the message appears?
when you say "it dies" does it turn itself off or just freeze up or what?
the more precise information we can get the better.
3 it could be that the hard disk has died or has problems and the pc cant detect a boot drive with windows on i - so, does he have a Live linux cd/dvd he can try to boot from, or a windows cd to try and boot from, thus bypassing the need for windows on the hard drive?

So, to recap, from turning the pc on, he sees a blank screen for several seconds then "component missing" appears, and the pc switches itself off.
The first thing would be to check the motherboard battery - this is a small battery that keeps the BIOS memory charged, so it doesn't "forget" its settings. If this battery dies, all sorts of wierd things can happen , that bear no relation to what is actually wrong.
A replacement battery should cost about £1 and is the size of a 10p piece. it fits in a small holder somewhere on the main motherboard inside the pc. dont touch both sides of the battery it will short out, hold it by the edge.
if he isn't confident about doing it, a local pc repair shop should do it for next to nothing (pc world will charge a years wages so don't go there).
assuming this is what is wrong, thats that.
Otherwise if he's local to me (Newcastle) drop it round and i'll have a look.
Best bet is try to find someone local (Not pc world lol) maybe a small local pc repair place, though that would cost a few ££ (some will offer to check it free, then charge if you go ahead with the repair-its worth phoning a few up).
Since I didn't get an answer to my earlier questions, I assume he can't get into the BIOS (usually pressing del key just after you turn pc on, but it may be different on his pc). if he hasnt tried, get him to try.
