In the past I have said that Fraudulent mediums should be exposed. (are there any other?) I have been conned in my life, they only did it once. (nothing to do with mediums) I assume that your friends/relations are of sound mind, able to make their own choices. Nothing wrong with debate but why do you try so hard to convince people that they are wrong? Leave them to find out for themselves. You can tell children not to touch something hot, but they do, for me, learning by my own mistakes is the only way. Try to enlighten, yes, then let them make up their own minds.

With great respect, I think you have missed the point. In general, skeptics do not take pleasure in trying to disprove mediums etc. or trying to argue against somebody's beliefs. The ''Psychics'' are the ones making the claims. Me personaly, I do not have a problem with any belief system but there is a world of difference between letting a child believe in Santa Claus and a person conducting a possible scam!

Terry, all we do is try to "enlighten" as you say I feel that believers who visit this forum post the same arguments for what they believe and we point out the flaws in their argument, they then, for a few posts, repeat the same arguments before disappearing, usually after berating us for not understanding.
Surely if no one pointed out the flaws in something we would have never progressed

I don't think people should use the word "we" on here as if everyone is reading from the same hymn sheet so to speak. I have found that sceptics, like believers all share different opinions which vary. There are some sceptics who claim to be athiests so no amount of 'evidence' will convince them otherwise whilst others just need to have scientific proof before jumping ship. I still consider myself a sceptical believer but I am very thankful to this site and certain posters who offer different viewpoints. I never take things at face value whether scientific of paranormal so always look at both sides before coming to a conclusion.

The process that skepticism is can lead to belief/acceptance of things - as long as they have supporting evidence.
You could ask the question, "Do you believe that we landed on the moon or are you a skeptic?"
Of course, skeptics do accept that we landed on the moon because that's what the evidence supports; so the question makes no sense when it's phrased like that.
'Not believing something' doesn't mean you're a skeptic and being sceptical (doubtful) of something doesn't mean you're a skeptic.
Skepticism is the process of rational inquiry and not the position of non-belief.
Apologies to those who've heard this all before but this point is worth repeating until people get it.

I accept what you say, what you do is with the best of intentions, all of the points you make are rational. The majority of the people on this site think about life/death more than the average person. I also agree that the so called top mediums charge a lot of money for what? But they still fill the halls all over the country, people going back time after time with little chance of a reading??/message. All over the country they are running courses on all aspects of the paranormal. There is a demand for all of this. Why?
It is also wrong for believers to come on this site and try to convince you that you are wrong, not a snowball in hells chance. (is there a hell?) But they believe in life after death. I know all of their anecdotal stories are not proof, I have some of my own. There is nothing personal in my comments, I have no axe to grind. As I have said before. Live and let Live. let them find out for themselves, in their own time.

Quite simple Jon. Despite everything, I still believe there is a God and an afterlife. I have looked at everything from both sides and will continue to do so. I am sceptical of most paranormal claims but occasionally, there are things which still convince me even if there can be no scientific proof. It is faith but IMO , not blind faith.

If your conclusions on issues are faith-based, even if you're 'sceptical of' others, you are not someone who applies the process of skepticism (i.e. you're not a skeptic).
