If your tweets are set to private then yes only those who follow you can see what you post. If like my account it is open, everything you post and to whoever can be seen by everyone!
A direct message on twitter is like a PM on a forum in that only the recipient can see it.
This has been how quite a few celebs have fucked up, they thought they were sending a DM and instead they tweeted it to everyone!
My rule is pretty much dont say anything to anyone online unless you are prepared for teh world to see it.

Not wrong entirely, I just didn't make it clear enough. Tweets sent directly to someone don't appear in your timeline, but yes, if someone chooses to click on my profile page then they can see which tweets I've sent.

they probably pay loads of people to scour twitter and facebook for "threats", yet do almost nothing to secure their border with mexico through which all sorts of undesireables enter. madness.
