MINDEN, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- A Minden psychic is facing a felony fraud charge following an undercover investigation. Helen Welch, 64, is expected to make her first appearance in court at 8:30 a.m. on Friday on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses.
Investigators said they launched an undercover investigation at the Little Psychic Shop after a customer filed a complaint. The arrest was made after an undercover officer received a $25 reading at the shop.
The complaint said Welch told the officer that the officer's husband was having an affair. Welch then said she would stop the affair and keep the straying husband home for a fee of $700.
Sergeant Jim Halsey said it is a crime to make a guarantee, in exchange for money, regarding something you cannot possibly fulfill. "It's a fraud, it's obtaining money under false pretenses when you promise a product or service when you cannot guarantee something is going to happen in the future. If I guarantee you, you're going to become a millionaire next month, if you pay me a thousand dollars, I can't guarantee you that."
The charge is a felony, based on the dollar amount investigators believe Welch illegally obtained. Any amount more than $650 is considered a felony. Halsey would not say an exact amount, only that it is believed to be in the thousands.
He also said other potential victims are continuing to come forward. "We had quite a few calls today, so we've assigned a detective to the case."
Anyone who believes they may have been the victim of alleged fraudulent activity involving Welch is encouraged to call the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Investigation Division at 775-782-9905 to make a report.
