'Forced' is the word, people I saw on the news that knew him or at least had spoken to him, all said he was so funny even off camera etc... I guess he has felt forced all these years to be funny when perhaps he wasn't feeling it himself. I often wonder why is it that quite a few fading/gone old actors/funny men seem to feel forced into being funny in interviews. People like Dustin Hoffman, William Shatner, Tony Curtis, Larry Hagman et al in any interview always seemed 'forced' to me with dumb audiences willing to laugh at the slightest thing. It must be the most incredible strain on a person to keep the whole 'persona' up no matter what all of the time. It is a very sad end to a life but as you say any time anyone dies, its sad. He wasn't a 'fav' of mine, but he did make me laugh at times and he was a brilliant actor and improvisor.
