Does anyone else think it a little strange that Northern Rock Building Society feels it has to 'downsize' its staff by 2000 employees to save money whilst paying the new Chief Exec Ron Sandler over a million pounds a year and his deputy, Ann Godbehere, £900,000 a year?
This seems to be a growing trend, my local Council has just put the Council Tax up, at the same time as employing a new Chief Executive. The previous one earned £66k, the new one is on over £100k, this, they said, was to get 'the right calibre of person' for the job. For £100k a year, they should have the power of invisibility as far as I'm concerned.
To top that, they have now announced that they are going to introduce a 'new level of senior management' to the employment structure. MORE pen pushers that WE have to pay for to do the same job that was being done before without them. I grow tired of this Country.....

I agree. It is only the private sector that should command those kind of salaries.

And only last month, Russell Hart, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust chairman, was given a 150% pay rise when the nurses got 2%, what the hell is going on?

Politics. That is what is going on.
At least we don't pay window tax anymore. Which is good as it costs £8.50 per month to have my windows cleaned.
My parents pay £60 every 3 months to have their windows cleaned!
See, if window tax was still law, it would be a nightmare.

Window tax was easy to get round, you bricked up your windows and painted one on. There a quite a few houses near me that still have the painted windows, from a distance, they're very realistic. (But obviously not from the inside of the property...) You probably know already, but Window Tax was responsible for the phrase "Daylight Robbery". I'm a vault of useless crap......

Throughout the NHS there has been an 'Agenda for Change', basically a re-evaluation of jobs within Trusts. Many of the staff in the Trust I work for have been downgraded and in those jobs that have remained the same grade - the people doing them have had to re-apply. Costing ££££s in HR expenditure. (A single advertisement in the Pharmaceutical Journal costs £1,860). Furthermore, now we are at the end of the financial year the 'non-replenishable funds' allocated to each directorate is being spent on anything and everything. There is a massive misappropriation of NHS monies in most Trusts.

What was the "public interest" behind that tax originally???

What was the "public interest" behind that tax originally??? The tax wasn't actually on cleaning them, bizarrely enough, you were taxed on how many windows you had. The theory being, the more windows you had, the larger the house, hence you could afford to pay more tax. It was in the 1600's, but I'm pretty sure they'll bring it back in again eventually.....
