Hey ya know what, it was a success. The lighthouse is happy and "Ghosthunters" has managed to entertain us. We can pick apart the "evidence" all we want but in the end the lighthouse welcomes all types of visitors. Those interested in lighthouses, history, or the paranormal.
The director of the lighthouse was kind enough to respond to my emails and he said spooky stories have surrounded the lighthouse for many many years, well before the show came to film. They have always told the spooky stories to anyone who wanted to hear them along with the standard historical tour.
I visited the lighthouse in 1998. We arrived too late in St. Auggie to take the lighthouse tour so we took the obligatory tourist photos of the outside and went to dinner. There we met some locals and heard some stories. So yeah, I'd say spooky stories have surrounded the lighthouse, and that whole town, for a long time before ghosthunting became a popular hobby.
I'm all for dark tourism when it benefits historical preservation and I do think in this case that's exactly what's going on. The LH director told me many television shows and movies do film at the location so having a paranormal themed TV show that's for entertainment was as welcome as any other.
Despite what the wacked out believers and the ghost groupies want to think, all ghosthunting shows on TV are for entertainment purposes. They exist to let you wonder. Not to prove the existance of anything.

well said Tricia. I really like GH. Main reason - they don't tend to depend on bullsh** psychics to pad their shows out!
