Ok this is going to sound really strange but I have a phobia only developed over the past couple of years to shop store alarms. I am so nervous to go to any stores with alarms if I have a bag or rack sack in case I set the alarms off. I have set alarms off before and no I was not shop lifting. It was because some work experience type had forgotten to remove the security tags. But it's happened quite a few times and I get more and more nervous every time I walk past one. Does anyone else have this phobia. It's been getting worse and worse lately. I suppose it is to do with the fear of embarrassment of being suspected of shop lifting and everyone looking round and watching you. It's a humiliation thing William

Ah William, that's a horrid one to have. I put spiders in my 'getting to know you...' thread, but I just don't like them really. I am happy to live with them so I guess it is not a phobia. I maybe developing a phobia to children though. It seems to get stronger at every school holiday period

Ah yes I know so many people with fears of spiders including my grandmother who even is she sees a picture of one my father has to visit her place to remove the offending page.
Despite my fear of needles, hights etc I have no fear at all of spiders and happily pick them up with my hands to put them outside. Just never had any fear of creepy crawlies and have never understood why people are so terrified of them. Then again many people do not understand my hugely irrational fear of needles or shop alarms.
I just can't be frightened of something so tiny and almost find some peoples extreme fears to them and other insects irrational and absurd and at times comical particularly when they are a big butch guy etc. I can understand people being scared of being poisoned or bitten or even catching diseases but not the fear of a common house or garden spider.
I love creepy crawlies and used to keep ants as pets. I was hoping to buy a tarantula but my partner drew the line there. As I say I can't get enough of spiders and creepy crawlies and have loved them since a kid so for me I have never understood the fear though of course I fully accept it is a very real fear and would never denigrate it. Just have often found it strange that someone could fear something I love. I guess that is what a fear very much is. Something very personal that only you can fully appreciate. One mans phobia is another man's passion.
I think as others have said the best way to tackle phobias is to be exposed to them ;D

I have a strange phobia to add to the fairly normal one of hospitals - the propellers of massive ships. I don't know if it would be called a phobia but I don't like propellers on ships, boat or planes; neither do I like rotor blades on helicopters. I just have this morbid dread of falling into the line of a moving propeller and ending up line minced meat. That's probably one reason I would never do water skiing or scuba diving - just thinking about those boat propellers sends shivers down my spine

You and me both. We should set up a help group. So relieved I am not the only one. It happens so often to me and even happened last week but the weird thing is not once have I been detained or had my bags checked. I always go to the staff and they just let me leave. I am still terrified though. The fear is always there. It's the humiliation of having the bags checked and everyone looking which terrifies me.

Huge ships in dry dock freak me out too. I don't understand how people can bring themselves to stand right next to them with that big hull towering over them. BRRRRR! In Birkenhead there's an old German u-boat that they saw fit to hoist up on display by the side of the road. It makes my blood run cold every time I go past it - it's all big and rusty and ARRRGHHHHHHHH!!!!

My oddest one is bridges. Over or under. The drive down the motorway to Cornwall sets me on edge, which is good for keeping me awake I suppose. I get that proper adrenaline 'run like buggery' thing. Awful, it is.

Heights is my phobia, just the thought of looking over a high building, or seeing a scene on the tv where they look down from a great height turns my legs to jelly

It's just looking at them that creeps me out. And if it's a water ride it's even worse. My idea of hell would be to be in the water (not the carriage) of a broken log flume at night.
