Has there been any proper scientific paranormal research shows on the telly? Surely there is a market for such a show that scientifically looked at all things paranormal.
The show could look at various phenomena such as ghosts, UFOs or any other paranormal topic.
I'm not looking for a light hearted approach but a more serious research and discussion type programme. The show could involve people with claimed powers, scientists and magicians.
Any thoughts, on what would be my dream 6 part hour long TV series.

They have done plenty on discovery channel. Usually get low ratings. Horizon have done the odd special too.
If you are thinking of a scientific version of MH, well most shows start off wanting to be scientific but ALL go down the fakery route when they realise how boring it is

If you are thinking of a scientific version of MH, well most shows start off wanting to be scientific but ALL go down the fakery route when they realise how boring it is A decent well thought out show that discusses all things paranormal need not be boring. All that is required is a well chosen presenter(s) and production team to book the right people to appear on the programme. Shows like Mythbusters demonstrate that science doesn't need to be bland. A similar scientific approach to the paranormal could be a hit if done in the correct way. As you pointed out Horizon has produced some very good specials that treated the subject with respect and not reduced it to 'the wee green men' UFO story at the end of the local news! Channels like Living TV missed an opportunity to treat the paranormal with a bit more intelligence. Instead we get shows like Least Haunted, which has had some great locations spoilt by a cartoon approach to what should be a serious intelligent investigation into alleged paranormal activity. Maybe I'm just being selfish but I truly believe there is a market for a less tabloid style programme about the unexplained.

I just think that it would get boring as it would be the same thing each week.
Such scientific shows are only any good for one offs

I think there were one or two good things made back in the 70's but the only one that is currently available is the Ghost Hunters DVD box sets through Delta Music Plc.
This is, of course not the TAPS programme.
It has interviews with serious researchers like Archie Roy and is certainly more worth watching then MH and its ilk.
I did hear of another series made in the 70s but for the life of me can't remember what it was called. Again, it took a more serious approach to the whole subject as I recall.

But seriously, as Admin says, I think the Horizon type programmes lend themselves to a one off hour long analysis of the subject. A whole series cannot sustain the general publics interest because either a) ghosts don't actually exist or b) The crew are waiting around until they get to the point where they realise that because of a) the presenters have to do something to 'entertain' and provide the programme editors with something half broadcastable. MH realised this at quite an early point, probably in the planning stages before the first series went into production, hence the need for a medium, historian and a sceptical tame paranormal person to fill the long gaps when Yvette wasn't saying fcuk or Karl and Stu weren't throwing stones. morganp
