1831 - Charles Darwin set out on a voyage to the Pacific aboard the HMS Beagle. Darwin's discoveries during the voyage helped him form the basis of his theories on evolution.
1904 - James Barrie's play "Peter Pan" premiered in London.
1977: Star Wars fever hits Britain. Thousands of people flocked to cinemas in the UK to watch the long-awaited blockbuster, Star Wars - a movie which was already setting US box offices alight.
1989, A former chef at the Chuck Berry owned restaurant Southern Air started court proceedings against Berry alleging that the singer had installed secret video cameras in the ladies toilets. A further 200 other women also took action claiming that the recordings were used for improper sexual fetishes.
1996: In Moscow, Andrei Maslich who was on death row for cannibalism was sentenced to death a scond time after attempting to eat his cellmate while awaiting news of a possible presidential pardon .

1694 - Queen Mary II of England died after five years of joint rule with her husband, King William III.
1879 The Tay railway bridge collapsed whilst the Edinburgh to Dundee train was crossing. The engine and carriages plummeted into the icy river below, killing 90 people. In 1979 British Rail commissioned a special train to take people across the new bridge at the exact time of the original accident ....... 19:15 GMT
1983 - Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys drowned while swimming near his boat in the harbor at Marina del Ray, CA.

1170 - Thomas à Becket, the 40th archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered in his own cathedral by four knights acting on Henry II's orders.
1860 - The HMS Warrior, Britain's first seagoing iron-hulled warship, was launched. At the time it was the world's largest warship and was said to have cost £239,640 0s.3d. to build
1888 - The first performance of Macbeth took place at the Lyceum Theatre.
1975: New laws to end battle of the sexes. Radical new legislation introducing a woman's right to equal pay and status in the workplace and in society came into force in the UK. And we've never heard the end of it ;D ;D
1986: Harold Macmillan dies. Lord Stockton, the former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, died peacefully aged 92. Members of his family were by his bedside at Birch Grove House, at Horsted Keynes, East Sussex, when he died at 1820 GMT following a short illness.

1999 - Sarah Knauss died at the age of 119 years. She was the world's oldest person. She was born September 24, 1880.

1935: Bruno Richard Hauptmann went on trial for the kidnap-murder of Charles Lindberghs baby. Hauptmann was found guilty and executed.
1971: Sixty-six die in Scottish football disaster. Sixty-six football supporters werer killed following a match between Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers at the Ibrox Park stadium in Glasgow. The disaster occurred when crush barriers collapsed as thousands of fans made their way out of the stadium.
1979: The trial of ex-Sex Pistol, Sid Vicious for the October 1978 murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, opened in New York City. Vicious died of a heroin overdose, thereby not living to hear the verdict.

What was the verdict Mr Jinx?. I was never a fan of this group and cannot recall the trial. Vicious pleaded not guilty and was released on bail. Four months after Nancy's death, prison and drug rehabilitation, he overdosed taking a lethal amount of heroin, and died before the trial ended .After Vicious died the police closed the case.

1924 - English explorer Howard Carter discovered the sarcophagus of Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor, Egypt.
2004 - NASA's Spirit rover landed on Mars. The craft was able to send back black and white images three hours after landing.
While on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory on January 3, 2006, Sylvia Browne predicts miners in the Sago Mine disaster would be discovered alive. Mere minutes later, she turns out to be wrong. This results in her being banned from the program by Noory. RESULT!

1967: Campbell killed during record attempt. Donald Campbell was killed a split second before breaking his own water speed record in his jet-powered boat, the Bluebird K7. He was travelling at more than 300mph (483 km/h) on Coniston Water when the boat was catapulted 50ft (15m) into the air after its nose lifted.
1986: Thin Lizzy star dies. Phil Lynott, the former lead singer of the rock band Thin Lizzy, died from heart failure and pneumonia after an 11-day fight for his life.
1958: Explorer Hillary arrives at South Pole. Sir Edmund Hillary reached the South Pole - the first overland explorer to do so since Captain Robert F Scott's expedition in 1912.
2000: First British women reach South Pole. The first British women to walk across Antarctica to the South Pole arrived safely, more than two months after starting their record-breaking journey.

1977: EMI fires Sex Pistols The music publisher EMI ended its contract with the Sex Pistols punk rock group because of their notorious behaviour in public.
1994: Mystery assailant attacks top US skater. An unknown man brandishing a metal crowbar attacked American figure-skater Nancy Kerrigan. The 24-year-old skater was forced to withdraw from the US national championships in Detroit after the incident, which left her with severe bruising to her right knee. Four men were later sentenced to prison for the attack, including Tonya Harding's ex-husband.
2009: The iTunes Music Store reached 6 billion songs sold.
