I think in general there is different explanations and not one all encompassing one for it.
Sometimes the hum has been put down to a factory, or other natural noises.
It is interesting though.

It happened in a village in Durham a few years back, and was put down to sounds emitting from the mines. Not sure about that explanation.
Low frequency waves, 30 kHz–300 kHz, travel by reflecting from the ionosphere, through a process of 'refraction.'
The low signal attenuation in this band is used for long distance radio communications, and can reach thousands of miles.
Therefore, the difficulty is relating the point from where the sound is heard, maybe some distance away, to the point where the sound event is initiated.
It has been suggested that as these 'hums' are often after seismic activity, earthquakes etc, that it may be a reflection of that sound event.

Here is a debunking from Chris White who has a Youtube channel.
Gives some reasonable explanations for the "trumpets in Heavens" and shows how many of these are copied from an original source.
Doesn't debunk the "Taos Hum2 though, and still searching for a reasonable explanation for that one. If I find it, I shall post it here.
However, a word of caution: Mr White did not follow Occam's razor and fails to give us the simplest explanation...
The Aliens did it!
