You can see how people who experience this psychosomatic stuff might believe themselves to be closer to their God than others and obviously they have to completely believe it themselves or it wouldn't happen. They would have no doubt about their abilities. Just another form of delusion.

Its nice the way people here dismiss things out of hand while knowing very little about the subject.

Personally, I think it is a phsychologocal reaction. Most people who have this stigmata are fervant believers but there are many who have the marks on their hands while others on the wrists.

It is close to being proven that the brain is capable of producing reactions to our physical body whether in terms of self healing or these marks.I certainly don't think they are a sign from God.

Ok lets use a bit of rationality here...Occams Razor here we go:

Is Stigmata likely to be due to some supernatural or divine action created by a Christian diety for which there is no evidence?

or

Is this a form of self harm to used demonstrate piety and to possibly attract attention similar to and as described by many medical and psycological disorders similar to Munchausen Syndrome (also known as Factitious Disorder).?
