I'm no big lover of cows (well, not since my last Court case anyway), but at the same time, I don't hate them either. You could say I'm indifferent when it comes to cows. Being a meatatarian, I find them a good source of food, and pretty handy for the odd pair of bike boots. So, I get a little miffed when I read that a cow, yes, a cow, is in the middle of a Human Rights discussion.
For those who are not familiar with the story, the cow in question is called 'Shambo', A 'Sacred Bull' belonging to the Skanda Vale Community in Wales, a group of Hindus.
Shambo, in line with Agricultural safeguards, was due to be destroyed due to bovine tuberculosis.
Mr Justice Hickinbottom said that the slaughter would be a "violation of deeply held religious views" and contrary to Article Nine of the Human Rights Act, which enshrines the right to freedom of thought and religion.
The World is going crazy.
Evan Thomas, of the Farmers Union of Wales, said:
Welsh farmers lose around 6000 cows each year due to TB safeguards, this is their livelihood and yet they comply because they understand how important it is to control this disease, and yet Shambo gets different treatment because a bunch of people 'worship' him.
Im off for a burger.......

The courts should have said that any infection transmitted from Shambo is the responsibility of the Skanda Vale monks and they must pay damages or face a jail sentence.

Agreed, but its proving the infection was spread from that particular beast. Its ok to say that it will not come into contact with other cattle, but Bovine TB can also be spread by Badgers, there would be no way of knowing where the infection started out from, which is why the Agricultural safeguards are in place and have been for decades.

I listened to that for about 4 hours straight, it goes out of sync but I loved it. So catchy.

I'm glad the the Welsh Assembly is now taking the matter to the high court. I don't often agree with the actions the Assembly takes, but, for once, it seems to be reacting straight away.

This is just another example of common sense and rationality retreating in the face of ridiculous and dangerous superstition, why we respect the bizarre views of these people at the expense of public health is beyond my comprehension. I hope that they ( the monks) dont contract TB because of thier idiocy, but if they do you can expect them to demand that modern secular science does all it can to treat them, these people are like errant children demanding enough rope to hang themselves and then come running to the adults when it all goes wrong in their little make believe world of sacred cows and silliness.
