In the early eighties the most famous mediums in the UK were two elderly ladies called Doris Stokes and Doris Collins.
Everything I have seen of them on TV leads me to believe that they were simple cold-readers.
It always seemed to me they were given an easy ride because they were senior citizens.
Anyone have any memories of these two ?
And as both these ladies have passed to the "other side" have we heard from them since ?
Kev.

Well as so often sceptics say that TV is edited to make mediums look good i would not rely on that as a basis for any study of mediums. Hard to do other wise i know But i have no real knowledge,i do recall reading a book on one of them but which i couldn't say.

Two frauds. Dorris Collins was exposed by James Randi funnily enough.
As for Stokes she was exposed by the Daily Mail. In fact Derren Brown mentions her in his new book, tells of how she would use private clients and put them in her audience, so when a reading was going bad, she could move to them as she already knew them
It was also found out that her staff would scour the local newspapers for deaths etc, then contact someone who had lost someone saying that Dorris had picked up on this person and wanted to give them a message. Of course this person would then visit the Stokes show, be asked to wear red so Doris could easily identify them, and when Doris was bombing out, she would then go directly to the person who had been rung up and give very specific readings (Hot reading)
Doris Stokes employed many tricks, and conned many many people.

Perhaps in their cases, DORIS was an acronym for 'Dodgy Old Rotter Is Shameless' or something similar.

Doris Stokes was a 100% fraud. I have spoken to various people who actually knew her. Oooh, really? What always amazes me is that nobody close to the medium and involved in the fraud usually blabs while the medium is at the top of their popularity.... I mean, imagine, when Doris was at the height of her fame, if one of her entourage had come forward with some juicy titbits; they would have made MILLIONS! Therefore, I can only assume that they are VERY well paid for keeping shtum while they are in the "medium"'s employ. Come on, Jon - gossip!

ROTFL!
I was curious that other magicians said they knew her, and wondered if it might have been in a professional capacity.

Lol... I read "Voices in my Ear" donkeys years ago - was very young and impressed at the time. I remember being really shocked when I heard she was a fake... Honestly, how did she sleep at night? she must have had a swinging brick for a heart...
