We all talk about the likes of Reiki, Homeopathy, Naturopathy etc, But surely our old friend is just as bad.
As a child I know my mom would give me a "finger of whiskey" to help me sleep, probably explains why i am the way I am now.
But i have heard many times that a tot of whiskey can make you feel better when you are ill, there are many other woo type claims.
However we know that in an emergency drinking whiskey can halt the onset of labour (Not that Gordon Brown idiot anyway) in a woman.
Whiskey can act as a pain killer, just ask anyone who snapped their leg in half what they want, they will say WHISKEY!!
It can also disinfect a wound too.
How about Meercat? This is a man who just used copious amounts of whiskey to recover from his recent problems.
So is our old friend Jack the real deal, or just another bit of woo.
For once i cant really make my mind up.

Take that ball and run with it Jon That is how I look at most 'alternative' medicines. They have been used for years. Just because us clever clogs in the 21st century like to brand them as something, doesn't mean they are any different than they ever have been.

I think drinking alcohol to cure your ills is a real alternative medicine

alcohol can help you sleep. Sleep is often what you need to start to recover. So yes. Jack Daniels, I think, can be considered to by alternative medicine.

I believe you are joking Jane, but alcohol does not help you sleep. This was covered on the sleep episode of Bullsh*t. It can make you go to sleep faster but it disrupts SWS (slow wave sleep) and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Quite a few studies on this now. Here is one. pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/aa41.htm

Having realised that I should have bought Shares in Jack Daniels these past few months I can give you the low down on whether alcohol is indeed a 'remedy' or a 'cure'.
After taking Industrial painkillers for so long I found that they were losing 'the edge' somewhat as I became accustomed to them, taking more sometimes helped but then I was always very aware of 'exceeding the recommended dose' as I was already well over it on a normal day.
Alcohol (I can speak for no other than Dr Jack Daniels) certainly gave the pain killers the boost that I needed, or it did if I drank enough of it. Was this a combination of the Whisky and tablets or just the whisky?
My conclusion after some months of pretty much daily testing the use of Jack Daniels as a medicine:
You still have the pain, you just don't give a s*it.

You still have the pain, you just don't give a s*it. That absolutely hit the nail on the head .... the nail was somewhat numbed by alcohol intake

If Jack isn't doing the trick, may I introduce you to two other doctors: Johnny Walker and Ron Bacardi. Between the three of them pain relief is guaranteed!

Ah, but the beauty of it is that this medicine even cures hangovers. Not much good on liver ailments though.
