Ultra Magnus' toy consists of a smaller robot, identical to Optimus Prime but with a mostly white colouration, which acts as the cab of the car carrier and combines with the trailer to form the familiar Ultra Magnus as depicted in the cartoon and comics. Like many previous Tranformers toys, the Ultra Magnus toy was a carry-over from the Japanese Diaclone line, where was released in silver, red and dark blue colors as "Powered Convoy," a powered-up version of "Battle Convoy," the toy which had become Optimus Prime, hence the identical cabs.

I can accept that it is Ultramagnus, but I always remembered him as white

that was reincarnated Optimus Prime I think, plus in the new comics he does exist as a white body inside the blue shell. And now back to Colin Fry channeling Magnus...

No, lets continue this Transformers debate, i think it is more important.
Now what was the first Ultra Magnus? was that the white one?
We need some kind of timeline here, and maybe an expert

I am a total sceptic when it comes to Transformers. It's a movement which has been set up only to sell toys to the believers. I am thinking of setting up a website to expose the people behind this evil cult: www.badtransformers.com And a happy new year !

hang on, let me dig out my comics....
The inner white robot is due to the Japanese simply repainting the original Optimus Prime toy and making it Ultra Magnus. I did have one lying around when I was younger but that was almost 15 years ago.
As far as Ultra Magnus in the cartoon/comic universe, he was either Prime's best friend who was killed and rebuilt at the same time as Optimus Prime or in the newer version of the comics, Ultra Magnus is in fact Prime's brother hence the identical but differently coloured robot forms
