Series 12? Didn't know that had started! I always love to watch purely for the laughs I can have. Besides being an ex fan I like to see how low they'll stoop nowdays.

Gosh, I can hardly wait for another round of this intriguing show. All those spirits to find and speak with, well knock with. New tables to be turned, different items to be thrown. I sit here in great anticipation as to what we are going to see and hear or not, as the case may be. The screaming squad will no doubt be in fine voice the throwing arms will be in training and I can not wait to see the new hair styles and wardrobe. All in all it is going be exciting is it not?. edited due to spelling error.

Ive watched a few of the series both in the UK and US recently after having not seen it for sometime. Mainly because im interested in where a tv show that has such a reputation out there for dubious practise goes on to and how they take it forward.
If for a second you take the view that they are not deliberatly faking it ( a view that so far i find less likely to subscribe to) you would imagine that their aim would be to finally silence the critics and find something that was compelling and could not be put down to their own creation of it , to do an investigation where there are more locked off cameras filming them from wide angles that show the whereabouts and full body shots of those involved , where the whole scene is independantly witnessed as being locked off and the crew are independantly accounted for by a neutral official, the technology exists for each crew member to have a head cam fitted so that the viewer in effect sees exactly what they see removing the need for ever missing anything due to dodgey handcam work,to introduce a member of the public preferably one who is wishes to be there not as a fantatical follower of the show but one who could be involved as a genuine outside independant witness,to invite those who have publicaly exposed or commented on the shows validity to come on an investigation and prove them wrong .
The allegation and evidence against them is well documented and you would think as a result it would perhaps effect the way they continued , maybe have some influence on their approach, or even cause them to deal directly with some of the allegations against them within the new series by acknowledging the reasons many doubt their work and doing things in such a way to discount the possibility of fakery or at least try out some of the hundreds of suggestions even fans of the show make in regards to how to do the investigations etc .
You would expect that , but then again it is MH we are talking about here and apart from Ciaran O'Keefes now almost ambivilant involvement in each episode there is little in the way of change to the format or attempts to address the critisism levied on them , infact if anything they seem to have gone even further down the road of sensationalism and theatrical tv .
If you look at it from the point of view that they are indeed faking it then you have to consider how they top each episode , how they up the ante and keep the audience interested as the odd flying object or noise is no longer going to satisfy their audience 12 series down the line. How do you keep an audience interested when there are so many other things available to them online on tv etc to choose from for a cheap scare ? The answer it would seem is to now offer them the sight of actual bodily harm being inflicted on the crew , to up the evil content by visiting locations that are more associated with suffering and torture and of course more recent and less historic locations where this occured, ones that wouldnt be out of place as a horror movie location , and to lessen the investigation content and up the seance/ouija/calling out/occult action instead .The have in Brian Shephard a medium who is almost an aside in the shows make up and offers little in the way of any real notable info or for that matter entertainment , the attention is now soley focused on Yvette Karl and Stuart instead of the lead medium which must have been something of a pain in the neck for them when they had the overbearing showmanship and scene stealing of Acorah and the less ham but still attention stealing presence of David Wells who near the end was clearly and frequently against the increasingly goading and sensationalist efforts of particularly Karl and Stu often causing even stalwart fans of the show to side with him and lambast the terrible twosome for their treatment of him.
The latest episodes in the US are perfect examples of how they aim to progress and continue the show , Brian is now reduced to wandering about like some clueless nosferatu waving his hands frequently to indicate something as his eyes flit wildly around more in desperation of actually having something to say than anything else ,any information he does offer is at best very vague and as such cannot be proven as incredibly wrong or right which no doubt is a relief to them when they look back to the gaffs and name dropping possesions of Acorah that caused so many to expose the things he was saying as misinterpreted research gone wrong or just pure fantasy. The locations have included mental hospitals (always a favourite for upping the ante),an isloated lighthouse and prisons ....less historical in the "old haunted castle/pub/house" way and more recent in their history (easier to research as well )and more appealing to the younger thrill seeking audience . The action now includes in one recent episode actual wounds and blood being drawn from Karl. Yep ....gone are the days of stu falling over or yvie feeling a bit sick ...now we have Karl Beattie on camera pulling up his shirt to reveal actual wounds resembeling the slash marks with blood still seeping from them . Which he claims were inflicted on him as he lay flat out in an enclosed morturay slab roughly 6 feet by 2 by a horrific apperition of a old woman ."She was right here" he mutters with his hand up to his face indicating the closeness of his encounter for even bigger effect . Another episode sees the entire crew of regulars being locked down in the cells of a death row prison as they are filmed ,noises and clangs are heard yet we are unable to see what each member is doing at the same time in the cells , of course now Degseys gone its left to the Karl and Stu to "come over all funny " and be possesed by the supposed entitys that once were locked in those cells . Why be possesed by some old harmless ham like derek used to be when you can be taken over by a serial killer or death row inmate ?!?
The show has lost its way even as an entertainment show ....the characters in the crew who once were people its fans warmed to have now become pastiches of themselves so much so that even the biggest fans are left wondering what the hell is actually going on with them . Even the impending intro of a new medium wont change the fact that this show has no where left to go in its present format and with its present cast ,its now all been done before and not even just by them but by the many other shows out there now in its wake .
Short of a serious injury or the presentation of an actual full faked apparition on screen i cant see what they have left to throw up in the way of shock tactics or viewer grabbing antics .Where does it end ? How far do they go to get the viewers ? The endless and frustratingly bad questions will continue , the cut offs just at the height of the moment and the off camera evidence will continue , the constant lack of any real investigation willl increase in favour of the set piece dramas .
I cant help but be interested to see how this new series in october progresses because if nothing else i would like to see how the Beatties and crew react and if they finally find themselves forced to resort to increasingly bizarre and controversial antics to keep the thing on its feet.
With most things the need to go one further escalates till finally its either utterly exposed by its own hand or someone finally gets the goods on the show that will end it once and for all .
Unless of course they do something no other show no other person has ever been able to do and actually capture the first real evidence of paranormal activity and prove us all wrong .
I wont be holding my breath ....but i will be interested to see if this is the death knell of the show or just another reinvention that will go further down the road they appear to have set out on .

Excellent overview Fluff. Not having seen it for a while I wasn't aware (though I kind of suspected) that it had descended into a pantomime of blood. I really can't see where they can go other than an escalation of the 'attacks' or ever more credulous creation and reaction to phenomena.
The mantle of the close encounter (of the turd kind?) has now passed from Dirk n David to the three ghostbustketeers but without an Italia Conti pedigree I suspect their acting abilities fall way short of Oscar nomination. The technology is certainly available to give viewers a more immersive experience but that would be akin to a stage magician showing his audience where the smoke and mirrors are placed. In order to compete in an increasingly competitive and crowded marketplace MH has no choice but to up the paranormal ante. It's not going to do this by relying on the old point, shoot and react school of 'investimagation', instead it has gone down the well worn path of shock and awe that by it's very nature has to rely on contrivance and the increasingly complex setting up of prescripted 'happenings'. 'Happenings' that I think will see an evolution into the visual dimension with more movement of objects, physical attack, possession and ultimately the deliberate falsification of 'an ghost'.
Wooo knows, we may even see the first MH moider (by an evil entity of course) - the victim will probably be Stu, who will then undergo psychic surgery and have to be relocated (probably to Dewsbury or Goole) under the Witless Protection Programme ;D

Most Haunted was at its peak when Derek was running the show then the excellent David Wells took over and it was equally as good, but since then its been down hill all the way. I recently re-watched Pendle Hill and it was fantastic entertainment.
