When I was reading through some of the prior articles and comments I saw reference made to a memory of having floated down a staircase as a child. This is a memory which I seem to have, as do lots of other people. I don't believe I actually did float down a staircase, nor do I believe that I was carried down by angels, as had been suggested to me by a well meaning friend who believes in that stuff. Can anyone tell me what is the actual scientific explanation for this very common false memory?

That was me who had this memory!! It is just the imagination of a child. Really is as simple as that, Children often fall asleep and then get carried to bed by parents etc, often the child is not properly asleep, maybe dosing, so they are aware of being moved, but not aware of how, hence why the mind creates the floating delusion.

Well do you know a lot of people must have this happen. I remember years ago telling my husband that I have this funny memory of myself as a child standing at the top of the stairs looking down and then finding myself at the bottom, like I had floated down and he laughed and said how weird, he is sure thats what happened to him too. I remember trying to see if there was anything about this on the internet at the time and after a quick look just now it is a surprisingly common phenomenon! Strange thing edit to say I would have bet money that I had already replied to this before and have a definite deja vu feeling typing this... thats weird too, ugh I'm off to bed lol

Yeah its a very common false memory, and sadly certain sections of society believe that it is a real phenomena and we are all levitating about
