The “tunnel of light” by which the dying persons reportedly travel to the afterlife, the cherubs and other heavenly creatures who welcome them on the other side are mere hallucinations.
The tunnel of light is only a hallucination
“About 60 percent of all people who were taken to an intensive care unit spent some time in a state of “near death,” says Oleg Vasiliev, doctor of highest category, staff member of the Institute of Resuscitation Studies of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. “After being brought back to life, they told stories about the bright light they were taken to as if by a fast elevator, the faces of their deceased loved ones they saw in the ‘afterlife’, some even said that they had been welcomed by Jesus Christ. However, the latest studies show that all those visions stem from the physiological processes that occur in the damaged brain of a patient.
First, the state is caused by oxygen deficiency, which has an impact on the brain and trigger hallucinations. Secondly, the release of endorphins results in a “sensation of unearthly calm” mentioned by the majority of patients. The endorphins are natural sedative agents produced by the body following an injury or stressful experience. Third, a rare ophthalmologic phenomenon can explain the “tunnel effect.” The person sees only the images created by the optic system regardless of signals entering the retina. The phenomenon is also stress-related,” says Dr. Vasiliev.
The state of “near death” was also reported by persons who were not dying at the time e.g. women during labor and people tormented by nightmares. Robert Baker, a psychologist at the University of Kentucky, arrived at the following conclusion: “The human brain responds accordingly when subjected to unusual mental and physical stress. It responds in a neurochemical way by producing defensive hallucinations, which fit in nicely in our religious beliefs, folklore, our hopes and fears.”
The report on a real state of “near death” that can be induced in a healthy person by injecting him with 50-100 ml of ketamin, an anesthetic, was probably the most killing argument to back the physiological theory.
“Therefore, the accounts of those who returned from the “other side” can’t be held as evidence of life after death,” sums up Dc. Vasiliev. As for the ketamin theory, it may as well explain the experiences relayed by those who claimed to exit their bodies,” adds he.

I'm no longer on the fence but scratching my ass on the bobwire, because I want to be sensible. Pravda just seems to be the national enquirer of the world of weird, bulls*it.
Is this the same Pravda that was the mouth piece of the soviet union, that declared the Soviet union was a paradise on earth and would be victorious over the capitalist west? I do agree with the logic of brain damage causing hallucinations but many who have not suffered brain injuries have reported similar visions. I think its another case of , we wont know until we die.

Dr. Peter Fenwick (neurosurgeon) who is the author of a book on NDE's; The Truth in the Light" holds a completly opposite view.

Have you also noticed how " fashions" change. At one time it was a loved one came into a room to get you,now the tunnel is the preferred method. Seem you cannot escape modernization, even in the after life.

Same thing applies to "night visitors", used to be imps and goblins, now it's alien abductors !
People often claim that they leave their body and float above their position and look down on proceedings.
I don't have a reference atm, but I read about an experiment in a hospital where they were placing objects in places that the patient couldn't see whilst conscious but would be able to describe if they had an OOBE.
That's one way of testing whether these OOBEs are real or hallucinatory.
Of course we're unlikely to hear about the failure of such projects.

When my husband was about 6 years old he had to have his tonsills out. There were complications and he lost a lot of blood, he remembers seeing the surgeon taking out swabs of cottonwool from his throat and they were covered in blood. The strange thing was he could see his body on the bed and was veiwing the scene from above, he could see the back of the surgeons head. The doctors later told his mother that they had nearly lost him and that he had been lucky to survive.

i had an near death experience when i was 6,so then i cant say i imagined it as it wouldnt be a subject in my imagination,i come from a non religous background so noone talked about god or jesus to me,and school didnt either.in my experience which i can still remember like it was yesterday.was i died left my body and i could see my body lying down with my mother trying to bring me back i could hear what she was saying and i could hear other peoples thoughts, pity i didnt bring back that gift. i then travelled up a light and was met by beings of light that spoke in my mind as their lips didnt move.they told me wasnt my time but they would show me something before i went back.i met an uncle that comminted sucide who noone spoke about and he told me about my life to come.and i had the choice of staying or going,i must of decided to come back as my next event was me back in my body, i told my mum what i had seen and about my uncle, and since this time i see my guide.i for one belive and maybe you will to if it happens to you its not what you see its what you feel and i cant explain it.
