A surprisingly huge number of people still mistakenly think that evolution is the idea of chimps giving birth to men. One of the reasons for people's difficulty in grasping macro-evolution is because of our mental limitations in understand large amounts of time. Given our cosmically short human lifespan, we can hardly grasp the nature of a thousand years, let alone billions.
The earth is 4.6 billion years old, think of the possibilities for biodiversity given the length of time available for tiny incremental change in DNA. For mammals like us, evolution is a slow and gradual process, it doesn't happen over night.
