So, here are my thoughts on the recent sudden turnaround in attitude that the Vatican appears to have taken on the subject of exorcism... which to those who follow the subject matter will be apparent by their willingness to contribute towards paranormal programming on the subject; such as the inclusion of the story of Father Vince Lampert in the programme 'Paranormal Witness' which would never have been allowed pre 1998; their increasing appointments of official exorcists since their re-assessment of the Rite of Exorcism in 1998 and their openness in advertising this fact; the fact that they re-assessed the ancient Rite at all considering it's extremely solid stance in the heart of the Catholic religion, and their courting of the media openly on the subject in general of recent years both in their own publications and their contributions towards others..
Vatican 2 came along in the 1960’s with ideas of modernising the Catholic Church, which was met with some opposition from traditionalists who were worried about losing their foundations in favour of moving with the times. The new liturgical rite for exorcism was published in 1998; The Rite of Exorcism or a “major” exorcism of a person presumed to be possessed by a demon(s); the previous one was in use from 1614, this was the last Catholic rite to be revised under the council of Vatican 2. The Vatican has recognised the heightened interest in Exorcism with a rise in interest in the paranormal over the last thirty years or so, and in my opinion they have become wise to the fact that they can use this interest to their advantage.
Father Vince Lampert became one of either twelve, twenty four or fifty… (depending which report or papal document you read)…recognised Exorcists in 2005, and courts the media superbly advertising himself and telling his stories of exorcism with such humility that anyone with any interest in the Paranormal will bend their ear towards him. ..and once he has your ear…….it’s a psychological double whammy, playing the devil at his own game; for to be convinced of demonic possession and to be convinced that a priest can cure it is to believe in the power of Jesus Christ and of God himself…and so we return to God willingly knowing he alone can protect us…and the traditionalists will be content as it brings the power back to the hands of the Catholic church…and using that belief in the power of possession they can preach that demonic possession is more than supernatural but that demons use the vehicles of anger, lust, greed etc ..and also any physical or mental disabilities and weaknesses to attack us…so everyone’s a winner; we get our stories, and we listen with intrigue.. and we question further…and we take it seriously because if such a large and important institution as the Vatican is now taking it seriously enough to cease its suppression this surely adds more weight to its believability …and a number of us will eventually see the light and turn to God, our protector from our own demons and from those of a supernatural form. I believe they are hoping to stem the tide of atheism and agnosticism amongst believers in spirits and demons, and turn people back to Christ using the very beliefs that made them question in the first place. Just a thought.
