Terry Pratchett is one of the most influential authors to me. I can't help worrying abou TV Film adaptions as they are usually cr*p (I think the only film better than the book was JAWS)

Guards, Guards was on the radio and it was A1. I think Terry Pratchett is over-rated though. Reeper Man is good.

I'd like to know what idiot keeps on casting David Jason in these productions. I mean, as Albert in the Hogfather he wasn't too bad a choice (although someone more in the mould of Wilfred Brambles in Steptoe would've been better) but as Rincewind he is too old, too fat and not ferrety enough. It's on a par with casting an actor with blue eyes to play Harry Potter when the books go on and on about how her has his mothers green eyes. It just points to sloppiness and the inability of casting staff to find the right person rather than a 'name'.
OK rant over. Move along, move along. Nothing to see here.

that's always the problem with converting books to movies, with books people tend to imagine different things and a movie only shows one. I think your right about David Jason though, I quite liked Hogfather but isn't Rincewind suppose to be quite scrawny and wimpy?

In the Discworld books, Pratchett is always very exact in his descriptions of the the characters and yes, in The Colour of Magic Rincewind is described as a tall, skinny, weasly/ferrety, cowardly, fast running young wizard. Someone in the mould of the Catweazle actor Geoffrey Bayldon. Not a fat 60 something shortarse.

I agree about the Jason. Completely wrong. How about someone like Bill Nighy? Could he have pulled it off?

Bill Nighy is a good idea although he's still too old for the role but if it has to be a 'name' then he is nearer the mark.

I nearly suggested Richard O'Brien.

For some reason when you said Bill Nighy I pictured Bill Bailey.
Jeez I had to edit to cover up the fact that I can't spell Bailey. Jeez I just blew my own cover. Jeez.

I am withholding judgment on this book to tv adaption until I actually see it. I hope it wont be disappointing, The Colour of Magic was (obviously) the first pratchett book I read, but was also the first book over 30 pages long that I read too.

*Rincewind*... :Wikipedia: The fact that he's still alive and running is explained in that although he was born with a wizard's spirit, he has the body of a long-distance sprinter. Rincewind is also reputed for being able to solve minor problems by turning them into major disasters ;D LOVE Pratchett... Oh, and the David Jason casting? ? ?

I think Nigel Planer (in the hogfather he played Mr. Sideney) would make a ideal Rincewind.
