My parents house stands next to the site of a Roman fort, the last one in the Antonine wall. The previous occupants of the house reported various strange phenomena, including the sighting of a roman soldier and the sounds of a crying child. One of the family's three daughters was supposedly 'bothered' more often than any other member, but what form this took, I've haven't been able to determine.
Their plight made the local paper under the usual 'haunted house' banner. Whether this was a clever ruse by the family to have their rates reduced, or simply local gossip run wild, i don't know. However, a local clergyman was prevailed upon to bless the house which gives some credence to the family's claims. This holy intervention seems to have cleared the atmosphere and nothing was reported subsequently.
I had no knowledge of these events when my parents took the house. To this day, i have never experienced anything that could be considered paranormal. I am open minded when it comes to the existence of ghosts-'i want to believe'. But, if i don't hear rattling chains, i won't claim i do.
When in the kitchen whilst alone you could always smell smoke even when there was no appliances on at all always a smell of smoke. No one smoked in the house at all and it was a rented house the land lord there was no wallpaper on paint so no smoke smells there and we decorated it ourselves, new curtains and new paint...... and there was no carpets but vinyl and he didnt allow smoking in his properties, so that ruled out smoking by the previous tennent, who we actually knew thats how we got the house and she didnt smoke in any case.
In the same kitchen when you were alone you could feel as if you were being pushed sometimes....
Upstairs there was a room that people simply couldnt go in no matter who went in they alway s felt realy uncomfortable and nasious....
When i was alone in the house with no one in, you could always here footsteps runing across the ceiling, which sounded like it was coming from the bedroom above....
Both myself and my daughter saw a small boy child leaving my bedroom one night, now this small child was not mine, and it certinaly didnt look like my nephew...
I went to check on my nephew who sleeps in the room next door thinking he may have wandered into my room...... but he was actually in a top bunk of his sisters room 2 bedrooms away snuggled up with her.. He was fast asleep, now theres no way in the space of about 10 seconds, he could leave my room, walk along a landing climb up a bunkbed and be asleep, he couldnt even hardly walk at the time he was only 18 month old, and had to be lifted onto the top bunk whenever he wanted to be up there as he couldnt climb the ladders....
I asked my sis the next morning why kris was in the top bunk with my neice, she replied that he wouldnt sleep in his room as the boy kept pushing him out of bed and was being nasty to him....
On the day we were moving a women come past the house and knocked on the door and told us she use to play in the house as a child and that she would never forget the house and wouldn never enter the house again as its evil (glad I was packing when she knocked)
When we did move out we found that the houe belonged to a local painter and he use to do freaky paintings on the walls, and that a fire had started in the kitchen and had killed a woman who was in a wheelchair, she was in the kitchen at the time and died of smoke inhalition.
Still think about that house and the weird goings on
When I was about 10 years old we moved into a house that got severely burned in a fire, the smell of smoke was still there even though it had happened a good number of years earlier. My mum had a friend round one night & I heard them chatting about the last resident, apparently, the resident had died in the fire and they died in my bedroom, I didn't give it much thought until later that night I heard scratching and what sounded like deep moans, the smell of smoke got stronger so my mind went immediately to how the last resident died in my room and I got really scared. I told my mum the next day that I'd rather sleep in the livingroom than sleep in that room again so she went about trying to find out why the noises happened but couldn't find anything obvious and let me sleep in the living room for a few nights to calm my nerves.
Was the house/room haunted? I don't think so. I was 10 years old, I had also heard a conversation about someone dying in my room so I put 2 + 2 together. On the night I heard the noises it was blowing a gale outside, the windows were old and we had neighbours upstairs. I now realise that when we get frightened our sensory functions go into overdrive so that is why the smell of smoke seemed to get stronger but it all felt very real at the time

Mine too...called a furnace that needs cleaning...NOT paranormal
In the same kitchen when you were alone you could feel as if you were being pushed sometimes....
Some people think when they lose their blance or if their foundation is slightly askew...that they are not directing their actions. Sounds like gravity, bad coordination is the culprit...not ghosts
Upstairs there was a room that people simply couldnt go in no matter who went in they alway s felt realy uncomfortable and nasious....
Smell of smoke...upstairs, where smoke and heat travels...might have been radon, carbon monoxide (my chimney infested by 12 foot squirrel nest, made me the same way...the squireels were alive not dead BTW...so no squirrel ghosts) or lead paint

I have this happen every so often as well, here are the 3 MAIN criteria for seeing 'ghost boy' run by
1) you are tired 2) you are swiveling your head towards the area where you see the ghost from another area 3) light behind you (tv, lamp) NO light in front
This is your brain not catching up to your eyes...that is ALL it is, an optical illusion.
Wanna know why it's a small child...and not an adult?
Because it's your HEAD shadow from a misaligned light source (behind you bright, in front dark) so that only a part of your shadow darts across you eyeline when you swivel your head (light in back, the image bounces back quicker then your brain can register it)
Put in a tired brain into the mix...that makes your reactions RIPE for a mistaken ghost sighting
I asked my sis the next morning why kris was in the top bunk with my neice, she replied that he wouldnt sleep in his room as the boy kept pushing him out of bed and was being nasty to him....
I am pretty sure why he said that info....probably because he heard "I saw a ghost boy" before he chimed in....I tell a joke and my 8 year old tries to top me to this day....kids

I heard the same at my house....husband chopped his wife in the head with an axe....then committed suicide, you know the good ole Daily Double.
Every sound I hear can be accounted for as house settling, old pipes, furnace, mice, and those darn squirrels.
Yet a psychic would look up my house....and come over and say I have a malicious spirit in my house.
Well late night when I am in the buff, watching Skinemax, with a tube sock....I probably frighten him away
I don't believe in coddling people. In the wild there is no healthcare. In the wild, healthcare is "ow, I hurt my leg. I can't run, a lion eats me and I'm dead!". Well I'm not dead. I'm the lion. You're dead!
My Mum and Dads house is supposedly haunted by a cat.
Several things have happened including doors opening six inches being pawed in the middle of the night (like when a cat does step aerobics on the bed with its front paws, if you have a cat you'll know what i mean.) And other cat like phenomena.
Now my parents have two cats so whenever they or my sister told me about these things happening i just attributed it to tricks of light and the real corporal felines.
However there have been two instances that i have experienced the supposed 'ghost cat'.
First when i was living there, i was in bed and the door opened six inches. I got up and opened the door nothing there? went downstairs and both the cats were LOCKED in the kitchen. The next day i had a look at the door, it is a heavy door and would not just swing open on it's own and this happened in the middle of winter so no windows were open, and the road is a good 50 meters away so i don't think a HGV could have caused enough vibration to cause it.
Secondly my best friend who had no idea about the supposed cat came round a sat on the sofa as soon as he sat down he jumped up and said sh@t i sat on the cat we looked nothing there! the door was shut and we looked under everything for a cat before we opened the door. There were no cushions on the sofa either so that rules that out. The thing is that my friend is very logical and skeptic and to this day he is convinced he sat on a cat (he also has a cat and big lazy one and he claims to have sat on it several times, unintentional of cause! so he knows what it feels like).
So thats my story, i must admit that this was a few years ago and that i don't know as much as i do now but from what i can remember and the things that i checked afterward i ruled out most variables to explain these incidents as natural or man made phenomena.
To this day my sister still keeps me up to date on the events involving this 'ghost cat'.
So thats my story of the haunted house i used to live in.

Rationale dictates that spirits are either total retards, or they dont exist.
How about a newly built house on land that had never been built on. The land was studied by archeologists before work started and no evidence of habitation was found. So heres the story. We moved into a house in March 95 and right from the start we had odd things happen, things moving that sort of thing then one day our friends down the road on the other side had a really freaky experience. They were sitting in their lounge when an australian coin was thrown at them from the stairs (which came down through the lounge). The family has no connection with oz whatsoever and hadnt seen the coin before. They went to bed that night and all the electronic toys in the lounge switched on, they went downstairs and turned them off and went back to bed. A few minutes later the same again, so this time they took all the batteries out but a few minutes later the toys all started again without batteries. They moved out a few days later. A week after that I was in my lounge,my wife brought me a drink and I put it on the book case next to me, within a second I was soaked, I thought i had not put it on the furniture properly and cleaned up. I got another drink and carefully put it in the same place and the cup was thrown at me . My next door neighbour came round and thought I was winding her up and so I asked her to do the same, she put her cup in the same place and sat down, a few seconds later she was running out of my house screaming and wouldnt come in for weeks. We had a black shadow that walked down the stairs and most days I would come down and find food stacked up on the kitchen sides and the contents of my wallet placed in straight lines across the lounge.
We tried to work out how it could happen. The kids were very young and couldnt get down stairs due to a stairgate that creaked loudly when you tried to open it and was very hard to open. Many people saw the black shadow and said whats that? and no we didnt tell people to look for it in advance. The drink throwing was equally difficult to work out. The area where the glass or cup was put was always dried and we even tried different coasters there and apart from the first time we carefully placed the cup and it was witnessed to be on the furniture properly by either my wife or me. Also the furniture was level because I even got a spirit level (no pun intended) to check because i was trying to work out why it kept happening.
If anyone can make any rational suggestions as to what could have caused these "hauntings" then please feel free to make suggestions as I cant see any normal reason.

When I was married I lived in the same house for almost 20 years. My sister had renovated it from a derilict welsh cottage and we bought it off her.
The living room was the original cottage.
When living there, my sister used to feel a prescence in the living room. I had lived there for a number of years before I experienced this feeling. I would literelly switch everything off and leave the room as quick as possible, not looking back and shutting the door behind me! That happened a number of times.
I spent many nights sleeping in the living room, especially in the latter months of my marriage and didn't experience anything.
My son had a sleepover with his mates, and he and one other felt very uncomfortable at one point in the night. They didn't have another...
I have had a couple of things happen in the house I'm in now. The estate was built about 30 years ago. With the previous occupants, I believe the woman lived here from when it was first built, and then when she married, her husband moved in.
She died about 3 years ago, he died summer last year.
My son has been tapped on the shoulder. This has happened in the bathroom and has now happened twice. I've been tapped on my back when cooking in the kitchen.
I've heard the floor boards creaking at the top of the stairs (outside my bedroom door) a few times now. This happens if the children are here or if they are at their dad's.
I've also had the sensation of someone knocking into my bed when I've been reading. This was when the children were at their dad's.
I've told my son the people who were here were good, kind people. I have to say that I've not been spooked by these incidents, as I was at my old place.
I am glad to see your approaching the history of rationally! However I have known clergy that gladly bless a house when new families move in and it has nothing to do with paranormal activity. It's more of a blessing for the family and there new life.
I moved into a house that was well known with the locals to be haunted, well no bugger told me before I moved into it ;D
It did have a stange atmosphere but I never really saw or heard anything, but my sister once visited me and she swore she saw someone looking at her from one of the upstairs windows while she was sat in the front garden.

I grew up in a haunted house. One night (I was about 13 yrs old) I was awoken when the air turned icy electric. I saw a man dressed as a country squire standing in the corner diagonally opposite my bed. Although he didn't move, his dog did, and sniffed all around the room. I pulled the sheets over my head & eventually fell asleep. The next day I said to my sister who I also shared the bedroom with, that something strange happened, and she replied that she knew, and went on to describe exactly the same that I had seen.
The dog re-visited the room, but I never saw the Squire again. The normal things like objects disappearing and reappearing happened all the time, and I felt a cat run through my legs. I often used to mentally 'fade out' & 'come to', which annoyed my sister greatlyas she felt that I was leaving her, but the patterns on my etch-a-sketch when I 'faded out' were really intricate!
There was other stuff as well. Mum later admitted that she & our grand mother had also seen the Squire in the same corner of the room before we were born.
