Came across this and thought it was interesting: Many people have experienced strange Near Death Experiences (NDEs) after a trauma such as an accident. People who experience NDEs often report seeing an intense light, feeling outside one's body, seeing oneself on the operating table, etc. Such phenomena have been linked with a variety of ideas including psychic, paranormal and mystical theories. New research from the University of Kentucky suggests a more down to earth possibility: predisposition to such experiences might be linked to sleep disorders. The research, published in the journal Neurology, compared 55 people who had experienced an NDE with 55 similar people who had not. They found that those with an NDE background were more likely to have a sleep-wake system where the boundaries between the two states were blurred. Examples of such "REM state intrusion" included sleep paralysis, sudden muscle weakness an hearing sounds on the edge of sleep. According to study leader Kevin Nelson: "REM-state intrusion could promote the prominent visual phenomena of near-death experience." This research does not claim that NDEs are just dreams, however it does suggest a possible link between REM state intrusion and a predisposition to NDE. source

It was during surgery on my head, I had a tumor in my ear and was given roughly 3 months to live (oh joy), they rushed me into surgery just within the two month barrier, the tumor was bigger than they had thought, and the disease it had brought with it had eaten the protective coating off of the nerve that controls the facial movement of one side of my face. They touched the nerve. Apparently it sent me into shock and I stopped breathing momentarily. I still get shocks down the tounge because of it which is horrid.
I didn't see a white light, I didn't envision myself on the operating theatre (thank god) - I didn't hear angelic singing or float away. I woke up after the operation thinking "That really hurts"

Oh I see, you had an almost dying experience, which I believe is not the same thing as an actual NDE. Still Ill bet your glad to be around to talk about it regardless of how mundane the experience was.

Actually have just been rediagnosed with another tumour in the same ear which is a worry because the nerve in there is already exposed, the slightest infection could paralyze the right side of my face, but it okay because they have caught this one early on. I have to go in on Friday, and they will decide if I need surgery or not. Hopefully this time they wont touch the bloody nerve.

Well I seriously hope everything works out for you, and if not well youll still probably be ok, even if your face becomes a little lopsided. People manage with bells palsy and youll do great too. Let us know if everything is ok after you see the doctors.

As long as I am alive I will be happy. There are people suffering in much worse ways.

Regards the OP - the problem is one of cause and effect - maybe the REM intrusions come from brain changes that occurred during the NDE (which other evidence supports does happen in real NDE cases). If true then its interesting - but nothing more than a consequence of the NDE rather than a cause of it
