I remember a friend of mine telling me about her elderly mother-in-law, who was a devoute catholic. The lady ended up in a home, her mind had totally gone as dose happen with old people, it can happen to any of us, the poor thing didnt know what planet she was on, and apparently when she died the catholic church refused to give her a proper service...why ? because she hadnt kept up her faith !!
how the hell can a woman in her 90's who didnt know her own name let alone anything else keep up a faith ? in the end they did the service at the grave side...now to me that is disgusting, she deserved a decent service and burial just like any one else.
All because she hadnt been a practicing catholic for the last few years of her life, but until she lost track of everything, she was a regular church goer for years !
I am so glad I am not religious.

The catholc church is a terrible institution, as you say if you stop attending you dont exist, their views on contraception are an active contribution to the aids epidemic and the concept of original sin is just sickening, how can a baby be born full of sin? I just dont get it.

i honestly think if you look at the majority of problems this world faces, religion seems to cause alot of them in one way or another

Acording to the Catholic Church it is a sin to leave your abusive husband, so in other words you have to put up with it and get beaten up every day.

The closest I intend to get to the catholic church is Father Ted.

"Awwwww Go'awn!" IMO catholosism has nothing to do with Christianity and everything to do with increasing the wealth and holdings of the church. Any religion that would condemn a newborn to an afterlife (imagined or otherwise) in purgatory because it hasn't been baptised

My Nan was a devout Irish Catholic and attended church twice a week. When she became too poorly to attend church the parish priest visited her in her own home to give communion etc... This makes me want to puke...

This is disgusting i think. If someone is in any religion then they shouldnt be turned away when they dont go to church for so many months or years. Who is to say that they have stopped believing or following the religion just because they werent at the service. Their circumstances might have not let them be there like your friend's mama. That must have been terrible for the family.

They're not all bad, I have to say. One of Australia's most notable advocates for human rights is a very fiesty Catholic nun. A very good person, despite her religion and the company she keeps!
