What can one say about the theories on ancient Egyptians beliefs in the spirit world? From what I know so far, is that they believed in the afterlife, and they apparently had a close connection to the spiritual realms, being psychic themselves? What do you believe?

from readings about them, they lived their whole life preparing to pass over. I wonder if history would be the same, if BP was in existence then. Ummm, what a weird thought.

The thing I find most interesting about the egyptians is that there was no apparent doubt about the afterlife. This was a society with great scientists capable of wondrous achievements yet they were all convinced of life after death. Today it seems you can be one or the other but not both. I wonder how much debate there really was about life after death in those days. Of course we could be all wrong and stargate is the truth.

it would appear that it was a common belief. Going by what i have read. It was a case of the pharoh being all knowing and all powerful. Nobody asked for evidence, coz it was a fact to them. they had no reason to not believe it.

Yes, it was a universal truth back then that the afterlife existed. They believed that they still needed an earthly body to come back to...i'm not sure but it was either that the earthly body would be transported to heaven (much like jesus' resurrection) or that one day the dead would walk again on earth (sort of like heaven on earth). This is why mummification was so important to them. To have no earthly remains would mean that ones soul would be trapped between the worlds also, by saying the name of the deceased and inscribing it meant that you would also live on.
As they believed the afterlife was so preferable to this one, it became a good way of keeping law and order. punishment meant that you were denied mummification or your sarcohagus would not carry your name on it (when the soul came back it recognised its body by the inscriptions on the coffin).
The afterlife was open to everyone, not just pharoahs. When the so-called 'heretic' king Akenaten came to the throne and created a monothestic (sp?) religion, most of the population were denied the right to an afterlife...only then royal family were. hence its unpopularity and eventual return to a polythestic religion.
bit of trivia for you all. on a tomb inscription made during the reign of akenaten is a poem which is almost identical to a famous psalm in the bible....a psalm that many christains think was created in biblical times...not knowing its actually 1200 years older than that.

It's called the "ka". That's why tombs were built with false doors. The "ka" was the soul or spirit. It came back to be reunited with the mummified body for the afterlife and knew how to get through those doors.

This was a society with great scientists capable of wondrous achievements yet they were all convinced of life after death. Today it seems you can be one or the other but not both. Four hundred years ago, the majority of European scientists were also convinced of life after death - most of them were very religious. The reason things have changed is not down to the fact that the society had great scientists, it's down to what those scientists have discovered. I must admit that I don't know a great deal about ancient Egypt. However, another important reason why European scientists are now more likely to not believe in God is because there is no longer the Inquisition running around the continent torturing and killing people who make that claim.
