i dont know alot abot law.but i was thinking why is it we have to swear on the holy bible in a court of law. regardless of our religion or beliefs. as the bible is not fact its myth.there is no proof as such that jesus was real.so why swear on a book.? i think anyone could swear on a bible and lie but why do it in the first place as whats the point in doing so if the court may not believe u and have a jury to decide.regardless. heres a link on the subject.. answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061224092325AAIJEDG

It is a bit ridiculous these days, but you can now opt to swear a "general oath" these days. But lets face it, if youre going to lie in Court, youre going to lie, regardless if you "promise" to tell the truth.

i totally agree monstermeercat it is stupid to swear on a bible these days even a general one.people will lie regardless so i think it should be stopped in a courtroom and just have the judges and a jury

its pointless in my opinion as if someone is found quilty and swore on the bible/book that they was telling the truth its not going to change anything.even if they was telling trusth or not

if people want to swear on it let them, if not they shouldnt have to, or maybe choose a book to swear on! Can I swear on The God Delusion? It's not compulsory to swear on the Bible these days, as monstermeercat says. My GF did jury service a few months ago and she elected not to since she's not religious.

If you're an atheist and you intend to lie, you should swear on the Bible. That is the equivalent of telling a lie with your fingers crossed! Trouble is I don't know that the court would take that into consideration when charging you with perjury!

You don't have to swear on the bible. There's a affirmation thing that you can swear. My mother in law is a retired solicitor and an athiest and used to have this affirmation used instead on all the legal documents that she had to swear.
