The shroud of Turin was never proved a fake, they took samples from where it had previously been hung and therefore got forensic dating from earlier material that was on it. I think they were ment to do further tests but its when the church allows them to. Care to explain this then? www.physorg.com/news4652.htmlAlso: Dont you think its strange that the only mention of a shroud that was supposed to house JC only got a mention at the same time Carbon -14 dating says it originated?

Well as you see the end of the article explains (1988 study, great advances since then) nuns repaired the shroud and the study could of taken samples of what they had done therefore ruling the shroud an early fake but other analysis place the shroud between 1,300 to 3000 years old, which easily takes it back to the time of Jesus.
Paintings and artifacts that turn out to be valuable turn up everyday it doesn't mean they are fake. A valuable thing like the shroud of Christ could of been hid away to protect it from the romans for hundreds of years.

Suppose we will never know probably just up to you to think it is or its not. Spot on Harvey. I know that religion has been the cause of a whole load of problems in this world, but again is there a problem with people having a little of bit of faith to guide them in their lives?

I mean, if we don't have faith what do we have? Not much, I suppose. I was always impressed by the story of Jesus telling Doubting Thomas that he asked for proof before he'd believe that Jesus had risien from the dead, and that more blessed were those who have not seen proof, yet still believe. The thing that is silly is this trafficking in relics, which was a huge industry in the Middle Ages, and goes on today with auctions of celebrity items. Humans just have a inborn need to have something tangible to connect them to someone or something they revere, whether it's a piece of the True Cross, or a costume worn by Elvis on stage. Ridiculous! Believe, but not blindly. Or do not believe, proudly. It's up to each of you to decide which you prefer...

The thing is, the so-called core message of Christianity is basically what any right-thinking, compassionate person would try to incorporate into their lives anyway - eg. treat others how you would want to be treated, don't kill anyone, don't be jealous of others' success, don't cheat on people, etc. so it's nothing to do with Christianity. It is entirely possible to be a good/respectful/decent human being without being a Christian, and it annoys me when Christians claim that they have the moral high ground. Some excellent points here. I dislike very much the sort of Christianity you refer to, and agree that being decent has little to do with the name of your religion.

its weird, the only thing that has ever made me feel really religious is Kevin Smith's Dogma which pretty much rips the piss out of the Catholic church from start to finish
