Quite a few christian holidays have been purloined from paganism, it was an early catholic church doctrine to accomodate the local peoples naturalistic theology. By incorporating their original belief with the new catholic one the church hoped the original would be soon forgotten and replaced. Lots of ancient and modern day churches cathedrals etc are build on pagan holy sites too.

From article: I think, however, that the appearance of a hole in one of a pair of my socks three months after the Pope's death is surely another sign of his miraculous powers. The hole is the shape of Antigua, which I have never visited, but which is on planet Earth like me, so (by Catholic logic) this has to be infallible proof that the dead Pope's miraculous powers are responsible for it.
;D ;D

I got into an argument once about how Christians took over the celebrations of others, and then I mentioned Mithraism, and suggested, as a kind of naughty mischievous joke, that the whole of Chritstianity had been based on this religion. Sadly, the other person replied by stating that lots of people had written about Jesus, and that this made him real, whereas Mithras was wholly mythical (and anyway, no altars to Mithras were found at Pompeii!). The irony was completely lost on him.

I also find it sad that Christians do actually believe there is evidence of the Jesus of the bible just on hearsay of their church....go out and research it I say
