Did anyone watch this film last night, by any chance?
Many of you will know my attitude towards religion, and I was all ready to go to bed, but I ended up watching the film, quite fascinated.
The way the catholic church was defending its 'church', I'm sure, is accurate.

I have seen this before and as a film I think it is very entertaining and certainly appears to be faithful to some beliefs.
The genuine nature of these beliefs by virtue of the 'marks' displayed has been argued on this and other forums and still has not produced a satisfactory response and therefore the whole phenomena is questionable - unfortunately.
I say unfortunately because wouldn't it be fantastic if the wounds were genuine reproductions?

I think most cases of stigmata that are not purposeful fraud are munchausens syndrome. The marks dont always appear in the same place, some have them on the hands (like the traditional crucifixion) some on the wrists (like the modern interpretation) some have the spear wound on the left, some on the right. If the marks were true to the crucifixion they would be uniform in placement but they are not.
Coindidentally although St Paul recorded in his letters to the galatians that "I bear on my body the marks of Jesus" It is unknown if it was actual stigmata or his interpretation of christs suffering. There are no recorded cases of stigmata before the early 13Th century though, and that was also coincidentally when the catholic church used the crucifix as its public symbol.

Yeah I watched a bit of it last night, didnt see the end though fell asleep> what happened at the end? Well, the girl was being possessed by the Father who died - as the rosary was sent to her by her mother (did you see that part?). She was writing a 'gospel' on the wall - one the catholic church had tried to hide, as it threatened the whole catholic church. The chief bishop (or whoever he was) tried to strangle the girl while she was possessed saying that he wouldn't have his church destroyed. The bit I liked was the fact the Catholic church will go to great extremes to protect their church and believes. To me the film was knocking the catholic church. Personally, I've never believed in stigmata and have read about it being a form of munchausens syndrome. Entertaining, it certainly was.

I LOVE that film! must've watched it 10 times... Due in no small part to the utterly delicious Gabriel Byrne as father Andrew I know, I know, that's wrong on so many levels, but by god I'd go back to church if he was standing in the pulpit... ;D

I think the brain is capable of producing physical abnormalities.Mind over matter is very real hence the guy I read about who has not eaten for 7 years and exists only on fluids yet still lives.

I am deeply suspicious about claims made like this. There is no way 'mind over matter' can produce the required proteins that the body and brain needs to survive.

Breatharian is he? Ingests sunhine? I can tell you right now this person is a fraud. He may claim to have not eaten in 7 years, but give me two months with him locked in a room well soon see how well he is. You might want to watch this videoclip. I should warn you though this person caused people to die because of her fraud. [gvid]-8060648983626971848[/gvid] video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8060648983626971848

Thanks for that excellent clip. If Jasmuheen's health deteriorated so much in a few days it's no wonder that poor Scottish woman died within a week of starting her Breatharian "diet". How can anyone of normal intelligence believe that living organisms can exist without food? It infuriates me that Jasmuheen isn't behind bars - at the very least she should be stripped of the assets she's gained through her seminars and books.

There is a little girl who hasn't eaten for seven (I think) years too. She has been fed via a tube since being a baby. They did a documentary about her and how her mum took her to a hospital abroad to see if they could make her eat. If this little girl lives on a fluid diet I suppose an adult could too and do when they have problems. I suppose the fluids just have to have the right things in them. No big deal I suppose.

You could probably survive just fine on various kinds of soups (i.e. you could probably blend any meal into a liquid), but you'd most likely have liquid coming out of the other end too, which wouldn't be too nice.

Lots of elderly people can only ingest fluid type meals. There are supplements that can be taken as a drink that contain the necessary vitamins, etc.

I must say, that mind of matter stuff works with various phobias etc and can make you ill, but your body has limits. Look at that nutter David Blaine, you can only push yourself so far.
With regards to the munchausen thingy, does that apply do you think to the blood coming out of people eyes? I have to say, I am definitely not sold on the whole stigmata thing. Maybe they just poke things in their eyes first?
Wow I sound so sympathetic!
Have to admit though that we have Stigmata on DVD, for the sexy actor reason rather than the content of the film. Seen Troy recently girls?
