If religion was mandatory, and you had to pick one of the existing world religions, which one would you pick and why? I'd probably go for Quakerism, if they didn't mind the fact I could never be a pacifist. (I'd have to have words about Christmas as well, I need an excuse to buy s*it loads of Twiglets and Whiskey...) Why? They don't believe that religion can be learned through books or set prayers. They see no reason for 'officials' in religion. No hypocritical Bishops and the like, dressed in ornate gold threaded robes standing behind gold laden alters preaching about helping the poor and learning humility. They feel that it is more important to get on with living this life, and seek to improve the conditions of humanity in this world, than to engage in speculations about the next. All in all, if it wasn't for the 'pacifism' bit, if I felt the need to have a God in my life, this would probably be the way I went about it.

Well I'm a bit hazy on all the different religions, but Buddhism is the one where they don't have a god as such, isn't it? I think they just promote non-violence, niceness and just generally being a good egg.
The other plus for me would be that dress me in a loincloth, shave me bald and sit me cross-legged (clicky hips permitting) and I am a dead ringer for a little fat Buddha. So I would more than likely earn extra points for that and get to eat first at all their feasts and festivals and stuff.

I didn't know that Quakers were like that Meercat. But I did know that Cadburys were Quakers and they make one of my favourite substances..... chocolate. calamitykate, I think you're right, Buddhists don't believe in god. The Buddha was just a bloke who meditated and taught philosophy. Nothing supernatural involved.

Then Buddhism it is I am, I feel, a deeply philosophical person and in fact was the first person to ever coin the phrase "I think, therefore I buy shoes" but I understand it has been changed somewhat over the years.

Ok, being serious, i'd go for being a Wiccan. Wicca is a very peaceful, harmonious and balanced way of thinking and life which promotes oneness with the divine and all which exists.

There does seem to be a concerted effort to make the religion seem very old, infact even older than christianity. Its much like the "based on the wisdom of the ancients" crap we see when there is a new woo healing treatment. Provenance = more worthy. Witchcraft has been around since some bright spark decided acting a little crazy and shaking a few feathers meant he didnt have to go out and hunt for himself, because of his ability to be a good luck charm/doctor/source of fear etc. Wiccans have only been around a short time though, no matter how much provenance they would like to pretend it has.
