A couple of days ago I had the great pleasure of attending a concert by the wonderful guitarist and folk singer Martin Simpson. One of the songs he played was a lovely arrangement of the old junior school hymn "When a knight won his spurs", from which he had removed the word God "because he's on speaking terms with George Bush". Nice one, Martin! ;D

Just to hijack the thread slightly... in my time, I've attended a lot of churches... mostly Spiritualist, but also some Christian ones. And while I expected to stand up and pretend to sing hymns, I found it to be a waste of time. There is no way I am going to sing, even if I did know the tune or words.
But my main point is this... why do some Spiritualist churches insist on using what is basically Christian hymns? The SNU does not really pay any attention to Jesus. Only the Greater World churches do that.
So why, if there is no Christian connection with the SNU, do they sing hymns?
a) Is it a time wasting tactic to reduce the amount of time a medium has to stand platform? b) Is it to bring up the "energies" into some music inspired vibration? c) Is it to warn off evil spirits? d) Is it for some legal reason, with regard to worshipping laws? e) Is it just to make my feet ache, with all the standing up?
