On this morning's Breakfast news programme 9about 08:40) they had an interview with a Medium (Carol) about how they did not like being lumped in to the Consumer Protection Act.
She started by saying that they (the "spirit workers association or something like that) did want fraudulent Mediums closed down. Good point.
She then made a point that "we had not been consulted" by the Govt about this. Now I do not know for sure, but from the posts I've seen on here I think that was a lie (but am willing to be corrected).
She also said that Spiritualism was the only religion to be coralled in to this act, and asked why the other religions had not been.
Another point (which made my boss laugh, even though he is not interested in this topic and was just listening as it was on) she made was "most mediums do not charge for their services, they just rely on donations". (Hmmmn....)
Rather than relying on my poor memory if you can "listen again" or get a podcast of this morning's show it is worth a listen.

Why would the Government consult them?
'Do you want us to take away your livelihood? Yes/No (delete as applicable)'
And does that mean she's OK with people not 'donating' £1.50 a minute on psychic phonelines?
Silly bugger.

On this morning's Breakfast news programme 9about 08:40) they had an interview with a Medium (Carol) about how they did not like being lumped in to the Consumer Protection Act. She started by saying that they (the "spirit workers association or something like that) did want fraudulent Mediums closed down. Good point. It's funny how it's always 'everyone else' who's fraudulent.... The Spiritualists were not consulted as they are not an 'Organisation' as such. Nowhere in the legislation does it mention 'Spiritualism', they have taken it as a direct attack on their Religion when in fact there is NOTHING that prohibits them from continuing with their beliefs. There is NOTHING in the Act that mentions Religion in the slightest, it mentions 'consumers'. It is a weak attempt by them to continue charging money for a none tangible service in an environment where the consumer has no legal rights or protection, using 'Religion' as their 'get out of jail free card'. People will STILL be free to follow any 'Religion' they choose, free to worship, free to gather, free to do whatever they please in respect of Spiritual belief, BUT, once you start selling something, the customer is entitled to protection. THIS is what the legislation is for. She's talking bulls*it. NO religion has been included in the Act. The belief and basis of Spiritualism is 'The continuous existence of the human soul'. The process of taking money for a service is commercial, two entirely different things. I cannot find anything written about Spiritualism that says part of their faith involves the freedom to take money from people. As I have said before, people making money from readings has NOTHING to do with a belief or a Religion. It reminds me of an old Spike Milligan sketch, 'The Jehovah's Burglar' Jehovah's Burglar: The Police are persecuting me for my beliefs..Sidekick: What are your beliefs?Jehovah's Burglar: I believe you have some stuff in your house I'd like to nickWould these 'Mediums' complain to Trading Standards if they were sold a faulty TV from Argos and were refused a refund because "The Argos God says it's fine, you have to trust him"? I think they would. ALL consumers should be given a level of protection. Don't want to get 'done' for selling faulty goods? Don't sell them. It has NOTHING to do with Religion.

I actually think that people like 'Carol the Medium' who was interviewed do nothing but damage the faith she is trying to 'protect'. By constantly whining on about persecution for charging money, it makes it appear Spiritualism is JUST about the money, and I'm pretty sure it's not.

Ah, right. There is a facility on the BBC4 site to download certain parts of the show as a podcast but I wasn't able to find one for the specific section we want
