Seriously John - your humour is misplaced here!

not impressed with the sick "humor" here, we're talking about young children suffering the worst kind of abuse, violence & intimidation.

Yes it's dispicable that this child had to go through this 'marriage' and all that it entailed, but John's quip was funny. The 'humor' on this site is what helps make it what it is. We don't all have to douse ourselves in ashes, wear sackcloth, beat our breast or get enraged/indignant for every sad story that gets posted here. Humour is a personal thing and one person's idea of a joke or quip will never please every one, but, why should it?
Ask Jon about the Pagan jokes etc.
Sorry, but you need to lighten up a little.

Why? Was it your children? Judging by your avatar, you're quite used to taking the piss or with your great concern, do you consider that something like that is suitable for younger members of the forum to see?

That wasn't what was said or asked
I said Judging by your avatar, you're quite used to taking the piss or, with your great concern, do you consider that something like that is suitable for younger members of the forum to see?
Whether or not you'ved discussed it with 'one' of them, it is still there for younger members to see and other members to be offended by. Or does your offending others not count as much as someone offending you with a quick quip?

I see nothing wrong with Johns humour. In a serious situation like child abuse it would be misplaced, however there was only a mention of her marriage at the start of the thread. It was only after the revelations of the case concerning sexual abuse that it lost its context. Yes its serious, but that point had not been reached when the joke was made. Lets not make a mountain out of a molehill here. I think the new information added later after the initial joke just changes the situation somewhat.

OH DEAR OH DEAR OH DEAR! I am sorry that anyone is offended! For a period of 27 years spread over 34 years I worked with the Samaritans and I do have some idea of what you might call "man's inhumanity to man!" I have listened to children detailing abuse, right down to the last detail. I have sat and squirmed and found my toes curling up. The missing years were because of family commitments or because I just could not cope. Humour was often the only release. Elsewhere is posted a clip from the Life Of Brian. That's my song. Always look on the bright side of life. Am I bragging? Perhaps a little. I am also a member of Amnesty International. Am I bragging again? Actually I am proud of some of the things I have done but I am trying to make a point. I do know what is going on in the world. There are things that I cannot do anything about. I don't laugh at them but around them. I heard a story on a comedy quiz show a couple of years ago. It concerned kids living a sink housing estate. The gist was that none of the kids needed sex education, there was one 13 year old girl who was already into her third long-term relationship. The audience thought it was funny and so did I. As has been said there's serious and too serious. But there was a story in the paper of a baby sexually abused and killed. I do not have a funny quip. Even if I did I would not post it. There is a line I would not cross. It's just in a different place to everyone else's! While I'm bragging. I helped bring up four children in a house of humour and music. I could tell you that they are the "beautiful people" or rich or successful. To me the important thing is that they are all happy! Drifting off slightly.... I was never too worried about my kid's first words. What always fascinated me was getting a baby to smile, even better to get them laughing. So why does a baby who cannot yet talk, have a sense of humour. I figure we are born with it, but some of us lose it. So I note the comments and the support from Happydylan. It's two of against the world! As defiant and sick as ever....... How does she reach the ironing board?

It seems that many people who deal with bad stuff professionally use humour to help get them through - eg. firefighters, doctors, paramedics and police officers. I can see why, personally.

You dont need to explain gallows humour mate, sometimes if you dont crack a joke, the alternative is too terrible to contemplate.

I must admit, I laughed at John's comment. However I had not read the article. If you only read the beginning thread then the joke is funny.

well lets just say that some of the things that happened to that 8 year old girl (and many many others no doubt) was just a little too close to home
