I must be the only person in the country who has yet to use ebay. But the more I hear about it and the more I hear people talking about how "wonderful" ebay is, I'm beginning to think I'm missing out on something rather good. So, is ebay really that good; is it relatively simple to buy/sell things? Is there any dodgy things to look out for? What is PayPal like? and are there really good bargains to be made? And is it also true that people will buy any old rubbish (literally)?

never used it myself. one of my former chums was an addict - he ended up stealing stuff from his family to sell.

Just like most things - ebay has its good points and its bad points, you just have to be knowledgable on what they are.

I've used it a few times and got f***ed over a couple of times. It's ok if you're totally sure what it is you're buying but sometimes clothes etc look really good in pics and turn out to be cheapy crap. Some people just didn't bother to send me anything after I paid them too and there's not a great deal of comeback, especially if it cost under £20. I only use it now for stuff that I can't find anywhere else like videos that are not being made anymore.

I've used it for buying and selling and I haven't had a bad experience. I have a rule that I won't buy from anyone unless they have 100% positive feedback. Might seem harsh, but you can get power sellers who have 98% feedback, have thousands of transactions and still have a lot of negative comments.

not really unfortunatly, but its sometimes cheaper to buy new things from amazon than used from ebay - i have used it for years and have over a 2000 rating and 99.9% positive feedback and people will buy just about anything, its been a great source of a bit of extra cash from stuff i would otherwise have given away or chucked out - i would encourage anyone to have a go at selling, its really easy, just take a nice picture and be honest about what you are selling - just give it a go with a couple of old DVDs or books too see how it works - be warned though it gets addictive :-) i bought my car on there too, and it was a great bargain sally

ok, one final question: what slice of the takings do ebay take when you sell? Is it a percentage or a flat fee?

They take a listing fee and a percentage of the final price, plus a percentage if you use Paypal (Ebay owns it). I forget what the percentages are; they sneak up and up without you really noticing until you get the invoice. Ebay is good to sell on if you have a decent item that's in demand and is worth more than about a tenner, otherwise it's just a load of hassle. Edit: As for a rival, nothing can really rival Ebay at the moment but www.etsy.com/ is geared towards home-made stuff (I think only in America though) and I read that Google might have a go at thrashing them but nothing as yet.

Thanks, Loz, have a Karma ;D
I think it would be really cool if some other big players like Google entered the auction scene and took away some of the monopoly from ebay and offer up a bit more competition.
Still, I might just give ebay a go. I have a load of what I would call junk (books, unused bottles of perfumes, make-up kits, curling tongs etc etc just girly stuff really that I've never used). Rather than just bin it I may as well lob it onto ebay and make a couple of quid:)
