A friend of my brother went on holiday to Turkey with his mum and whilst they were there she let him get his name tattooed down his arm in a market.
He is now home and is has gone all lumpy, full of pus and is all bruised and keeps bleeding.
He is 16 and his mum is playing the whole thing down, saying it will heal over.
To me, it sounds like a serious infection. Should he go to hospital?

Straight to hospital( in my opinion ) as the infection could go straight to his heart. I'd ask for a hepatitis check too whilst he's at it.

It's a pretty dangerous thing to do when you're in another country. I don't know about their hygiene standards, etc, but I wouldn't do it. Tattoos are for life, he could end up with an ugly mess forever. I hope the lad's okay, best of luck to him.

sounds like the kid could do with better parents Totally agree. I had my tattoo done in New York, and there was not one scab because it was done by a reputable person and was looked after properly. Every hour I had to put an antiseptic gel on it to stop infections and scabbing. I would have him in A&E asap!!!

Unfortunately I can't get him there and he isn't with me. He was telling my brother about it on MSN messenger.
We told him he should go to A&E but apparently his mums says it will heal over - I don't think she wants him to go to the hospital because he is only 16 and is too young to be having a tattoo in the first place.

That's the problem nowadays kids as young as 14 or less are having them done. No reputable tattoo studio should touch a child under 18. I can't understand the mother, how ridiculous not to take him. A doctor tutting at him for having the tattoo is better than him fighting for life because of blood poisoning.

I find it hard to imagine the kind of parent who would happily scar their kid just to avoid the minor judgement of some nurse or doctor, let alone the possibility of infection
