A great example of why psychics normally avoid testing like the plague.
Hydrik was obviously cheating (he admitted it later) and probably thought he could pull it off. Of course a magician will be aware of how illusions are performed and know how to place relevant controls.
Many psychics, however, genuinely believe that their powers are real. If such powers are real the controls would not prevent them from being manifested.
Why is it then, that those who believe themselves to be genuinely psychic avoid being tested?
Could it be that deep down they know that their ability isn't real and failure to demonstrate their ability under controlled conditions (which would prove its reality) would confirm their doubt - and that's what they're afraid of?
Perhaps.
Although, in my efforts to get psychics to submit themselves to testing, I have found that they seem to have zero understanding of the need to authenticate themselves. They know they're psychic and that's it!
