...."Psychic Surgeon". Yes, another one! I was having a hunt round last night and found this.....(actually I'm sure he has been mentioned here before, but I couldn't find anything) [My emphasis] So the person I know who has suffered with this terrible condition for more than 20 years, can have his problem "resolved" within 1 hour, by someone who, I am guessing here, has no psychiatric or indeed general medical qualifications. This claim, referring to vulnerable people with a major psychiatric illness, is disgraceful. If people with a bit of back pain, or ingrowing toenail, want to give their money to quacks and idiots, let them. To me, this claim is on an altogether different level. www.andy-porter.co.uk/index.htmlThoughts, anyone? ?? Edit. Andy, togther with Gary Mannion and Nina Knowland founded the UUPS. Gary has since left www.ukpsychicsurgeons.org.uk/?Unity_Of_UK%26nbsp%3BPsychic_Surgeons

Mannion at least provided some testimonials of a kind - I cannot find any on Porter's site. I'll be contacting Wiltshire TS to see what they say.

Too many of these Trading Standards are bloody gutless, I want one to just come along and truely put one of these frauds out of business.
Please let me know how you get on, maybe we can get an article out of it, at the very least if we can have something on the site that shows this guy got stopped from making at least one claim that is good

I've got a radio interview downloaded from the UPS site, don't know if it is still on there (I can't find any links to it although it is mentioned). I had partly transcribed it (it's long) but will finish when I get the time. It has Porter, Mannion and Knowland talking complete crap.
Given that Knowland heavily implied that Mannion was a fake when she 'kicked' him out, it will be interesting to find out how much she agrees with him in the interview.

It is odd- everything about mannion always is - but on his site, he originally claimed to be the founder of UUPS, but after I hade made a comment on UKS, it suddenly became "co-founder"!

Anyway, I have sent an email to Wiltshire TS, and will send an additional letter tomorrow with added info about "psychic surgery". A member of UKS, "pebble" has drawn attention to this claim from Porter... Is he implying he can treat cancer? If so, that is illegal, as I understand it. www.andy-porter.co.uk/index.html

Julia, Please go ahead - I'll provide any info I receive. Didn't Knowland have to remove claims of treating cancer months and months ago, or am I getting her mixed up with someone else?

Yes, Nina's a slow learner so Meercat had to get his teeth into her twice over her claim to have "successfully treated" cancer: badpsychics.com/thefraudfiles/modules/news/article.php?storyid=603badpsychics.com/thefraudfiles/modules/news/article.php?storyid=660For those readers new to Nina, she came to our attention when she approached her local newspaper to tell them about her search for children with Cystic Fibrosis to benefit from her wondrous healing powers. In Nina's own words, "The truth is I had offered to help children (no charge) with Cystic Fibrosis, it is a condition near to my heart which I feel strongly about, I had already written and consulted the Chief Executive of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust with my offer of help." Nina wasn't the only person to consult the Chief Executive of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust - BP reader Hayley also did so, and here's the reply she got: "Thank you for bringing to our attention details of the newspaper article from Nina Knowland. We do share your concerns about this, as with other such promises or statements, many of which can cause considerable harm, especially to those who are desperate or vulnerable. We will certainly keep an eye on the situation and if the problem rears its head at all, we will certainly do something about it. With Kind regards Chief Executive Cystic Fibrosis Trust" I'll bring Andy Porter's grossly irresponsible claims regarding schizophrenia to the attention of the relevant organisations.

The claim that schizophrenia can be "resolved" in less than an hour has disappeared from Porter's site. Perhaps someone had a word with him? ?

I jumped to conclusions! I'm sure it was heavily insinuated by Knowland that they had a fallout. I'll try to dig out the thread, I'm sure I found it for Julia a month or so back.

Thanks. So am I getting this right, one "psychic surgeon" criticising another for being unprofessional?

Maybe she really is just deluded, and wasn't aware the rest of them are con artists? It's a possibility.

Final para.."Whilst I understand your concerns, and am grateful for the background information (re psychic surgery) you have provided at this point in time I do not have any evidence to prove Mr Porter is making false claims in the course of his business." Hmm. Oh well....I'll add something else from the letter... "Even if we received a few complaints I know from past experience of dealing with other "healing" claims that there will always be people who will give testimony to the authenticity of the claim"

So TS are willing to accept anecdotal nonsense from people who were ill at the time of being treated? Surely TS know how depserate people are to believe a miracle cure is working?! How bloody frustrating!!

I e-mailed the charity "Rethink" twice regarding Porter and got no reply. Then I noticed that their site - www.rethink.org/ - had a discussion forum, which I joined mainly to post this warning: So far my post has garnered fourteen replies. Most of them are perfect illustrations of why Rethink, other mental health charities and the media in general aren't interested in debunking stories - they know woo ideas are widespread and don't want to alienate their supporters/readers. Take a look at these little gems: Finally, someone who seems to live in the real world:
