I am wondering if any of you are familiar with a so-called Brazilian faith healer called John of God. I know that he is no based in Britian but I feel that he is relevant as thousands of people from across Britain and around the world attend his centre in central Brazil every year. One of my Australian friends has just come back from seeing him and says his experience was amazing but is reluctant to discuss it with me as he knows I am a sceptic.
There are various websites dedicated to John of God with some praising him and some being very sceptical or critical. He rarely allows doctors to witness his work and rarely gives interviews to the media. There are also reports that visitors to his centre are closely observed. The ABC in America a few years ago did make a documentary on him that was in some ways critical. I am just wondering if anyone is familiar with him or knows anything about him. Thanks.

Yes heard of him, there was a documentary on him a few years ago that showed him to be a bit of a fraud. Randi has also covered him before i believe

Yes he is very bad news. I think the documentary was the ABC one. The problem is that so many people swear by him and word gets around with more and more people spending their thousands of pounds and dollars going to see him all the way in Brazil. Very sad.

It was a UK documentary i think. They had some woman with terminal cancer?? she went to see him, but when his associates realised she was in danger of dying while in the country they made sure she was not allowed to see him again, and i think got her chucked out of her hotel too?

The guy makes me sick.
He doesn't charge for his consultations but he does charge for crappy herb 'prescriptions'.
A lot of very sick people waste time and money going to see him from all over the world, when they could be spending time with their families and saving their cash.

But Gary Mannion and Nina Knowland speak very highly of him - he MUST be on the level!

Thanks Amaris, yes very interesting article. I will certainly have a lot to say to my friend should he bring John of God up. The more I read the more I see to dislike.
