Hi there, I hope this is the right section to post this and forgive me if it is not. As this is the science section I hope it is. Any way here in Australia the debate ove an apparent link between mobile phones and cancer has been reopened. I have been discussing it with a friend and the discussion has got quite heavy. What are your views on a possible link between mobile phones and cancer?

Personally i think you are more likely to get cancer from car fumes as you walk down street. Hwever i dont like the feeling when on fone for more than a few mins and my ear gets warm.
I always use speaker on it.
There are more than enough radiowaves etc in the air, so a few more from phones aint gonna make much difference to be honest.
I wouldnt like to live under a pylon though, more due to the noise.

1. Scientist decides that mobile phones emit radiation. 2. Scientist realises that mobile phones can affect equipment on planes. 3. Scientist recognises that the brain uses electrical impulses. 4. Scientist puts 2+2 together to make 7.354. 5. Scientist does preliminary experiment that suggests a possible link. 6. Scientist gives preliminary, unverified, unpublished, non-peer-reviewed results to media. 7. Media reports that mobile phones cause cancer. 8. Public only hears media reports and never gets to see scientific research. Sometimes (but I'm not sure if this is the case with this issue), 9. Published, peer-reviewed results are totally discredited by other scientists. 10. Media not interested in this development. 11. Public still under the impression that mobile phones cause cancer. Good blog-post on the subject: scienceblogs.com/denialism/2008/03/cell_phones_and_cancer_real_or.php

Yes those are my general feelings too. For me I have my doubts about the link as yet though I understand both sides. Quite a big issue over here at the moment.

The way things are these days, it is getting you dont know what to use anymore !!! how long do you think it will be before before they start saying pc's cause one condition or another.
I have more chance of getting hit by a bus than cancer from my mobile phone and what gets me is if these things really do cause such illnesses then why are they still on sale then ??

People who smoke mobile phones deserve all they get.
You do realise that the biggest cause of death is life?

My grandfather ate vegetables and fruit all his life (along with other things, of course), and he died a few years ago.
That's all the proof I need that vegetables and fruit aren't good for you.

Just like every other area of life, one expert says one thing another says something else and the twain rarely meet because they end up entrenched for various reasons, not all good. That leaves the non-experts wondering what's going on. On top of all this you get journalists of all walks presenting their opinions on the subjects as if they were facts and muddying the waters still further.
