I had already listened to the other interviews on the Birmingham Skeptics website so this will be a response to the Chris Ryan interview.
I found it very interesting. There is always debate about the relationship between the two sexes and it seems to me the male is mostly viewed as the sex most likely to be unable to sustain a monogamous relationship.
From my past readings on the subject, which I admit are limited, I’ve always thought the male most likely to have sex outside of relationships because of an inherent need to distribute sperm and so continue their line of genes. But I do think the females also have a basic need.
Once they have had their nest and nurtured their young I don’t see any reason why their inherent need would not be to look again for a male to fulfil the role of insemination. It’s well documented that ovulation will be the time the female is most vulnerable, if you like, to sexual encounters and are more likely to exhibit sexual body language such as thrusting their breasts outward and flirting with males in a kind of ritual.
The idea he puts forward about the changes in society post agricultural do make sense in that it becomes about possession. Patrick’s point about religion having a lot of input into the way we think today also makes sense to me. But I’m dubious about Christopher’s assertion that humans are the only ones who engage in sex for other reasons than reproduction. There are examples of homosexuality in the animal kingdom and although it may be more about dominion rather than pleasure that too could be said of some humans.
Of course the most shocking part of the interview was that Patrick said dildos!

The book looks at the function of homosexuality in humans but I don't know about in animals. I was unable to get a full copy in time for the interview although I will be ordering one soon. I loved the fact that he is humble enough to say that he might be totally wrong. He is probably the most laid back person I have ever interviewed and he comes over as a totally relaxed guy. There was a lot of what he said that struck chords in terms of the standard narrative being, to all intents and purposes, very on the side of the male. Very much in terms of sex being about reproduction and protection of the male lineage and power, and little about the enjoyment and social role that nevertheless leaks out and pervades our society in so many forms. When you grasp one it seems that you have to deny the other. You can't be a faithful spouse and have an active social sexlife outside of that (well usually). I'm still undeciced about his arguments but the writing style of him and the co-author is amusing and easy. Try some of the snippets off his site. I will therefore be getting a hold of that book. As for the use of the word dildos, there were several other options on the tip of my tongue. If you listen you can hear me mentally calculating which implement of pleasure to mention without making myself sound too depraved

I am interested in reading his book now though, I'm sure it will be a good read.

I do have to add though that our sexual nature is very complex and it is affected by our personal experiences and needs. My post was only commenting on the very basic role of sex.

This idea that men are more likely to cheat is ridiculous. Society and culture has more control over who is more likely to do what in my opinion.
For example in some muslim countries if a woman cheats she gets executed, where as the man gets a pat on the back. So it is highly unlikely that a woman will go out and be a serial cheater!
My personal experience is that the woman in todays British culture is much more likely to cheat
