On reflection, this seems like a wise decision, as we parents do not know exactly what we are giving to babies and the effects that they have on their young bodies. If a child is that ill, then i'm sure a g.p would prescribe something that was suitable to treat and takes away the ability to dish the medicine out like water, not knowing the effects of self prescribed drugs. I knew of a woman who dosed her child up every night with Medised so that the child didn't wake her and she could get a full nights sleep, the kid was comatosed most of the time due to the medicines effects.

I'm so scared of giving Isabella medicine. I've only given her medised a few times when she has been really suffering with teething Will stick to gel and granules from now on.....

My sisters youngest boy Oliver, had a fit one day in the car and she rushed him to hospital, he was ok although when she told the doctor she had been giving him Medised as he was unwell, they told her to stop using it immediately as it was such a strong medicine.

My doctor always said with coughs, that it is much better to cough than supress it with medicine.
My sister doses her son up with medised all the time! May give her a call now.

I've never heard of this stuff. I occasionally give mine Calpol at night when she has a temperature but yeah, with some of the medicines about now, it seems to be almost like giving them a tot of gin, which apparently people used to do way back.

Used medicsed on both my children, still do on the little fella. Its safe when the correct dosage is used. The danger comes from parents misusing its narcatoic effects to sedate children so they sleep longer. If you maintain the correct dosage the effects are as expected and safe.
Reading between the lines of this, its a "nannystate" national recall.
Incidentally there is not much evidence that cough medicines work at all, most have a placebo effect, except the very strongest doses of expectorant.

You're right, but they are taking them off the shelves and changing the age......so i'd rather wait until i know for sure.

That would be them covering their arses, if you are a responsible parent and do not exceed the recommended dosage then you will have no problems. This blanket ban will turn into another anti vaccination campaign or eggs cause salmonella fiasco if we let it. If you have a concern you should speak to your doctor or even your local chemist (they are often able to offer really good advice about medicines, and often far in excess of what your doctor can tell you)

I agree with Bob. And Mia, I used to give half doses to my lot of anything - including Calpol!
I don't think I ever gave my lot anything other than Calpol though, and a plug-in menthol thingy that I used to have by the cot. I still use the plug-in thingy.
It's only recently I've started to dish out the cough medicine - and my youngest is 9.

I never felt that cough medicines did anything anyway, they never did for me so I never gave them to the kids. I used to steam the room they were in .... using the kettle! Worked a treat!

My doctor always said with coughs, that it is much better to cough than supress it with medicine. Totally agree with that. We cough for a reason and to surpress it might cause more problems than just getting over it naturally. Sometimes a doctor would give one of my kids some medicine to dry up their runny nose, but in my mind it's runny for a reason. They probably get over these things no quicker if you use medicine than if it was to get better on it's own.

I dont wish to alarm you oh2bhappy, but the 'plug in thingy' is probably more dangerous than giving your child the CORRECT dose of medication. They have been known to ignite {(electricity=heat)+oil, not a good combination}. I used to hang a damp towel with drops of menthol/eucalyptus on the radiator when my toddlers had a cold, it's far safer!

The fire brigade hate those plug in airfreshners. They cause no end of fires, apparently.
