The image of the crucifixion, one of the most powerful emblems of Christianity, may be quite erroneous, according to a study which says there is no evidence to prove Jesus was crucified in this manner. Around the world, in churches, on the walls of Christian homes, on crucifixes worn as pendants, in innumerable books, paintings and movies, Jesus Christ is seen nailed to the cross by his hands and feet, with his head upwards and arms outstretched. But a paper published by Britain's prestigious Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) says this image has never been substantiated in fact. Read More

I remember seeing an article about stigmata. One of the points raised was the positioning of the marks that people were claimed were stigmata. They were consistantly in the palms of the hands whereas evidence suggests that nails through the palms would not be able to withstand the weight inflicted on the bones in the hand during crucifiction. It's far more likely that nails would be driven through the wrists where the bones are stroger which would make stigmata claims senseless. Ooh, I feel quite queasy now.

What is locked away in the vatican (conspiracy theories aside) is probably the worlds largest collection of heretical literature and art masterpieces and most definately original astronomical and mathmatical formulae from the greats of bygone years. Maybe even the original gospels with all the parts they left out.

I believe that those who were crucified were tied to the cross with ropes. So, Jesus (if he existed ) could have been nailed through the palms as his palms wouldn't necessarily have had to bear his entire weight. If ropes were used to secure the person to the cross around the wrists then nails could have been driven through the palms to stop the person slipping his hand longitudinally along the cross and escaping. Just my conjecture though.

Doesn't the alleged shroud of Turin show the wounds on the wrists?

the shroud of turin is supposed to be a 14th century manufactured relic. you could earn a lot of cash in those days if your church had an authentic relic.

But there is controversy over that too Bob. The part of the shroud they tested was part of a restoration.
I believe the Shroud is 2000 years old, BUT i see no evidence of it being Jesus. But then again maybe it is, it still doesnt prove he was the Son of God
