I find the concept of eternity disturbing too. It's more disturbing than the idea of mortality. While I'm kinda sad that we all have to grow old and die, I find the idea of living forever almost horrible. Maybe popping in from time to time to see how things are going.... but living in an after-life forever? Yuck! Imagine still being around in 4 billion years when the sun turns into a red giant and then dies, consuming our planet in the process. Too too sad to watch! Nope - when the final bell tolls for me, it's lights-out. And given the alternative, I'll settle for mortality. I agree. If we live forever then why do we reproduce?

If we live forever then why do we reproduce? If you was to(excuse me whilst I say this dirty thing to you ) Believe for just a moment that the afterlife did exist...just for a moment..That you believed it existed... what would your concept of heaven/the after life be like? Seriously just try it for a moment. .Because your preconceptions of the afterlife would have a profund affect on your perception of eternity there.. Sincerely I'm interested in your response.

SO roughlky 20 billion modern humans have ever existed.
Now i would say that a trillion, trillion, trillion rats have existed, and they have been evolving in the afterlife a lot longer than us! Surely they run the afterlife as the superbeings?
Oh wait i forgot about the cockroaches! They have been around since the dinos, there must be gerzillion of them in the afterlife, you litterally couldnt stand anywhere without them crawling all over you in the afterlife.
They must be the top of the food chain in the afterlife, we are just their bitches in comparison surely.

If you could actually try answering that then maybe you would see why you cannot logically grasp why it doesnt make sense in your opinion. Pretend...for a moment..your a believer... Simple as that!

Darling! You say the nicest things.
I just had a look at your lovely little Phoenix Centre Forum. What is a Complimentary Therapy, Darling? Is it a dodgy potion that says nice things to you?
Try Complementary, Sweetie. You know it makes sense.

Oh honey your more than welcome..anytime :oYou surprise me, who would have believed you have any understanding of complimentary,or the concept of people saying nice things to you! Did you have to ask someone else what it meant and how it feels to get a true concept of the word? Indeed it does, thank you for pointing out the spelling mistake..much appreciated

Ahh I see this thread as been well and truly hijacked! ;D In response to this quote by the esteemed Skepto... There is another way at looking at mortality which is much easier to grasp, think of how lucky we all are to be in a position to experience what being "alive" is all about, think of the many billions of people that by a chance at conception have never or will never be born!. We have basically won the most amazing lottery the universe has ever created! I hate doing it but I'm going to quote Richard Dawkins: In my view a belief in an afterlife cheapens the real, actual lives we lead. And to stop for a second and think of what this wishful thinking in a life after our death would actually mean..I wonder how many of us would really want to sign up to it? Also why is the concept of non existance so bad? Do any of us fret over the billions of years before we were born? Why would the many billions of years after we die be any different to us?

The problem is i have no preconception of the afterlife. It makes no sense to me, therefore i cannot comprehend that kind of existance, it makes no sense, and goes against everything i know thats real. I cannot imagine something as hellish as FORCED eternal life.

No, Kennypoos, I just imagined what most people probably say about you and then imagined the opposite And yesterday you found the word 'snatch' vulgar. So glad you seem to be thawing out, Babydoll.

Again lets get back on topic. Why don't you two start another thread to trade insults. But as to an afterlife and "us" being alive. How do we know "we" are alive. We could be the dead being viewed from another reality. We assume, because humankind to that, that we are at the top of the tree. Maybe we ain't. Maybe i shouldn't have ate those mushrooms.

I was genuinely interested what others preconcieved ideas of heaven/afterlife were. Escpecially the sceptics on here.. For one moment to pretend there is an afterlife what do they think it is like over there?

I agree that simply because a concept is a struggle for the human mind to grasp is no reason to deny it. But as to what it maybe like. I suppose that would depend on the individual.

The thing is what you are asking of skeptics and atheists is like asking a fish what it thinks the desert is like...if you have no concept of such a place its impossible. Which afterlife would you suggest we describe? the Christian, Hindu or Shamanic versions? My own "made up" version of the afterlife would obviously be similar to the Christian version simply because of my culture. If you look at the earlier posts and consider what an eternal afterlife actually means..I personally would consider that to be the worse thing I can think of! I wouldnt want to try and imagine the reality of such a thing!

But I would still be interested in what peoples ideas of the afterlife were.Ok if pretence cant be done, then what were you taught?

I have said that for ages, the idea of an afterlife as described by mediums sounds like hell to me.
If i had to, i would rather believe in the Christian idea of Heaven and Hell, at least then when i go to heaven i know i aint gonna bump into any psychics or mediums, cause they will all be keeping toasty down below

So what is your variation? That is all I am asking for.

In my case I was indoctrinated with the usual C of E mumbo jumbo, but then again I always thought even as a kid how bizzare the whole idea was, I always considered it weird that people are happy to look forward to living forever in what is essentially a medieval idea of paradise, as to my young mind all of the art depiciting "heaven" is mainly of that age!!
Nothing about it seemed to make sense ( any concept that raises more questions than it answers is seriously suspect) , and living forever was the icing on the cake for me..I really hated to think of having to do that!

The most often repeated opinion is of a garden with your relatives, friends and loved ones around you, but I think that is highly unlikely. I think "Heaven" is a personal place where we must first judge ourselves and our actions in our last life. We probably get the chance to revisit times and places that have been significant to us during our life. As for how it looks, who knows?, I think it will just feel comfortable and familiar and peaceful.
Now I expect to be heavily ridiculed for my statement and fair enough if you want to , but who of you can say that what I have put is wrong? can you prove it is wrong? No, I dont have any science to back up my belief and accept that logically we are just lumps of meat who have no right to live forever, but I dont believe we just live forever as we are now, I believe in reincarnation and so the concept of heaven being full of all the souls who have ever lived doesnt fit within my belief system. Hope that keeps us on topic and I will now enter my bomb proof shelter wearing full body armour and await the onslaught.
