Irish filmmaker Kealan O’Rourke will and write direct ‘The Houdini Box’ for 20th Century Fox, it has been announced. The film will be an adaptation of American author Brian Selznick's young adult novel of the same name, which was originally published in 1991. The book is centred around aspiring magician Victor, who, after many attempts at Houdini’s tricks, finally meets his hero who leaves him a mysterious locked box. iftn.ie/news/?act1=record&only=1&aid=73&rid=4285709&tpl=archnews&force=1

Q&A with Magician Pete Firman. What’s your favourite magic trick?
I really enjoy things that involve people from the audience on stage. Having them up with me changes the show each night, I don’t know what exactly will happen. Those tricks keep me on my toes! I suppose I really liked vanishing a donkey on Weymouth beach last year, for The Magicians. Forget those tigers in Las Vegas! In Weymouth, we use donkeys.
Which magician do you most admire?
Many, many, from various eras. I think the magicians who have directly influenced the kind of magic I do are Penn & Teller. I watched their Channel 4 show as a teenager and realised magic could be cool, have an edge and a point of view. They are still creating interesting, new magic and consistently surprise and impress me.
Have you read any Harry Potter books – what do you think of his magic skills?
I must admit, I’ve never read one! Consequently I rather embarrassingly got a question wrong about HP recently on Celebrity Mastermind. Not good for a magician.
If you were on death row, what would you request for your last meal?
A good burger and skinny fries. You can’t beat it! Cooked medium rare, with an ice cold beer.
When did you last cry?
Yesterday. I was so horrendously hungover, I couldn’t move and it brought me to tears! How pathetic.
What is your greatest extravagance?
I’m not particularly extravagant, I do like nice restaurants. What’s nice is when I’m touring I get to check out a lot of places. It’s fun getting local recommendations when you arrive at a town. It’s easy to eat junk when you are on the road, so I at least try to eat properly in nice places.
Who is your most famous friend?
Sooty.
What did you have for breakfast today?
Half a bagel, buttered. Orange juice and coffee. Do people really want to know this?
What is your favourite TV programme?
Man Vs Food is my guilty pleasure. I can watch marathons of it! I’m a fan of Americana, so it not so much the 25lb pancakes I like to see, it’s the cool restaurants and diners.
What are your best and worst memories of school?
Best would be having been encouraged in my hobby, which was magic. I’m sure that’s critical in it having become my career. Worst? Cross country running. What’s the point?
What is your worst trait?
Not knowing when to stop working. Performers can find it hard to switch off. I’m constantly thinking about or working on new ideas. Sometimes I really should just relax.
Which four people, living or dead, would you invite to dinner, and what would you cook them?
Morecambe & Wise, Harry Houdini and Steve Martin. I’d cook that burger and chips, much more enjoyable than eating it on death row!

Believe it or not, yes it is. You start with the circle, flick it and it changes in to a square. I've got one tucked away in the attic somewhere.
