I guess proper counselling would maybe cause bereaved people to accept the death of their loved ones and move on, which of course would be EXACTLY what the SNU wouldn't want. After all, you can't make a decent buck out of them then, can you?

erm there is no charge from SNU mediums or the churches, they are free to attend, all you are charged for is a cup of tea at the end of an open circle. Mediums working out side the SNU are free to charge for their service..

So in that case, if there were no grieving and gullible punters, there would be absolutely no point to the SNU or any of its "mediums"?
To be fair, I do feel that the mediums who do not charge are probably the ones who genuinely think that they have a gift. Either that or they just like feeling special and needed. But just because someone does not charge for a service, does not mean that they do it purely through altruism.

Why is it always assumed that people are in this for the money? At the end of the day people do have to live and have expenses...this really grips my s*it!

Yes, people do have to live.
But if a plumber takes money off me for telling me my boiler is fixed and it isn't then he is a cheat and a liar.
Ditto someone who takes my money for pretending to speak to my dead child. Only that is morally MUCH worse than being a dodgy plumber, don't you think?

Yes I agree, but......lets say they are not pretending....that they are communcating with spirit! Then surely they have a right to have expenses paid I think that I will say no more on this subject, as it has all been said before and this isn't what this thread is about.

not every one who goes to the churches, go for messages !
and btw I am a spiritualist and I dont want or NEED to feel special or feel NEEDED, I am just me, people take me as they find me and if I can help some one I will.

All discussions on here seem to go back to the same thing..an attack on mediums. Fair enough it is called Bad Psychics and so mediums and psychics coming on here should expect a certain amount of grief, but some topics are not about that. This thread is about "spiritualism" the religion, this encoperates far more than mediumship. Whether we believe in mediums or not the religion aspect should be respected. We don't come on here and blast Catholosism and nor should we. In my opinion slating the principles and beliefs of spiritualists is downright disrepectful..yes we can give views and opinions but doing it in such a derogitory way is not called for.
If I came on here and took the p*ss out of those of a Muslim faith for example I would be blasted. I thought good debate relied on a certain amount of mutual respect whether we agree or disagree with eachothers points. Sorry had to be said.

Most people who consult a medium are doing so through THEIR belief in an afterlife, the belief is not thrust apon them by the medium.

I quite agree but in the many ventures and paths i have took in life i never dismiss anything totally. As to those mags i am not sure if i have ever seen them but no doubt they will turn up in some Docs waiting room. Fair comment,i went the reverse way. Total cynic and vocal about it then through small events started to change my mind. That is not to say that i do not shake my head at some of the more airy fairy comments i hear and see. One example was a forum were a woman wrote saying that her son was seeing spirit, what should she do. Well not post it on a soddin web site but get you kid to the docs Anyway going off on a rant so better stop.

Maybe not, but with a mixture of flattery, cold reading and luck, mediums sure ENCOURAGE the belief, don't they?

I respect anyone's right to a belief, but I cannot respect the belief itself if I think it is rubbish, can I? Therefore I have a right to state my opinion on someone's beliefs.

Um, yes I can, if I think it is wrong. Blasting someone's beliefs does not mean I am blasting the person. I used to work with a committed Born Again Christian and we had some humdinger arguments about Christianity itself BUT she never took it personally; she realised, quite rightly, that I thought the world of her. She was, and is, one of the nicest people I have ever met. Doesn't mean I have to respect her beliefs, any more than she would have to respect mine if I thought I could fly.

I agree, stating one's beliefs is fine and in fact debate couldn't happen if people didn't do so. However, it is the way it is done. Questioning the principles of spiritualism in an adult manner is acceptable, taking the p*ss out of them is not..and yet from what I have seen this thread has not been about discussing a religion in a respectful manner, it has been once again turned in to an attack. I don't believe in mediumship as I have had no proof to make me believe but I do not call people who do believe "gullible" who am I to question their beliefs. What I will do is give my reasons for not believing and I will question the validity of mediumship..however I still respect personal choice.
Maybe my version of mature respectful debate differs from others.

Statements and assumptions don't lend themselves to debate either. For example..
"Believers take the other path; if something happens they cannot explain, they take this MASSIVE leap and assume that it is caused by the paranormal."
Have you spoken to every believer in the world then ? Have you done a statistical report. We have believers in our paranormal group and they are amongst the best investigators I have ever worked with. Yes SOME believers are dogmatic, but not as dogmatic as many sceptics.

There are a lot of religions i dont agree with out there including the one I was origionally born into, but I certainly dont blast any one for it, I will listen and give my point of view, but in a respectful manner and will have the deceney to respects the other persons belief and ponts of view.
Where as you would rather ridicule that opinion and be disrespectful and who the hell are you to go round blasting people and be so abusive !!
