Out of interest....any sceptics going to be celebrating Christmas this year? Are you standing by your " There is spirit world, once yoru dead yoru dead" Or are you going to be a wee bit hypocritical and celebrate along with the rest of us believers?

I'm going to pick and choose the bits about Christmas that I like, just like I do every year. I shall put up a tree, give and receive presents, eat my own weight in turkey and chocolate (not together), get pleasantly squiffy on Harvey's Bristol Cream and send as few cards as I can get away with, as I am lazy like that. I shall explain a bit more about the Christmas story to my littlies (they were a bit too little, last year, to really understand any of it except the presents) because I think it is a nice story. I shall get all misty eyed when Johnny sings "When A Child Is Born".
If embracing all that is good about Christmas, while not believing in virgin births and resurrection means I am a hypocrite, then so be it. I couldn't really give a stuff ;D

i think the main thing is we all enjoy it. If people believe they do, if not, its personal choice. I dont like cruelty to animals, but like kate here, i would love to eat my own weight and more of turkey and meat. My point is, as posted elsewhere, is just be kind to eachother. Its sounds like a sermon, but what of it. Kindness matters and does has positive effects.

We always have a completely secular Christmas - it may be a little hypocritical to celebrate it as we're Atheists but at the same time, I don't see anything wrong with getting together with friends and family once a year to celebrate and have some fun.

That is definitely how me and mine view it. It is about family geting together, sharing food, gifts, and time. The tree, garland, etc. are affectations. They come and go, and we pick and choose what is releavent, as do the religious. People who are not into woo have long celebrated their cultural traditions, among all the atheist Jews, many go to temple, light the candles, make the meals, etc. It is about maintaining the culture, and sharing a heritage. It can be a beautiful thing. Even without the magical fairies flittering to and fro granting wishes and raising the dead.

Good on ya guys ....Christmas spirit means many things to many people around the world..And it is wonderful that The BP Sceptics will indeed be enjoying the spirit of Christmas while you have a go at the believers for believing in the essence of spirit

Are you questioning our belief in Jesus Christ or Santa Claus ? ! Dont think Kendra thought of that lol She just wanted to have a go at the Sceppies. I will celebrate the commercial aspect of christmas personally, as I have no interest in the religious side of it. Everything closed on Xmas day so what else am i gonna do. Ah, the commercial aspects. The best parts, and truest meaning, of Christmas. Merry Christmas to all, and be sure to keep the receipts!

I'll worship my plastic green tree with its pretty lights.
I think of Christmas more as a cultural thing than anything else (that's for me personally - I come from a family of Christians who celebrate it as the birth of their saviour). It's been celebrated in this country for well over a millenia; it seems sort of scroogish not to join in. The same symbols, even the same festivals, can mean different things to different people.

Co sign I am NOT religious...religion has killed more then it has 'saved' I think Jesus, Muhammed, and the like were the 1st con artists Sorry if offended the religious here....but that is what "I" believe But X-Mas...everyone tries to be a bit nicer, and I will not refuse a day off...since I get very little time off, especially near "Year End"

Thought that Xmas was a celebration of the BIRTH of Jesus and for a little while people actually try and practice what he (supposedly) preached. You know all that good will and love thy neighbor stuff If you believe he was the son of god as well..then that's up to you .Personally for me not so much. I see it as a day of celebration and recognition of a good and great man.Much in the way that Martin Luther King day is celebrated in the US.Only on a grander ,global scale. So yeah! I'll be "celebrating!"by getting together with my friends and family to eat, drink, exchange gifts laugh, reminisce ,love and generally remind myself once again why I hold these people so dear to me. And just maybe I'll extend that view to the rest of Mankind if only for a few hours. In that aspect i see Xmas as more of a Humanist celebration not spiritual and nothing to do with what happens after you die. Like Jon said Kendra was just having a pop at the skeptics.Unfortunately she picked the wrong festival. Now,If she had said Easter.....

Easter is great, in fact it is the biggest celebration in teh Greek Orthodox Church. Now if she wouldve started the thread about Easter, she may just have had me over a barrell. But since she said Christmas i need not worry. Close one there!!
Right off to paint my eggs now!

Plus the kids love the pressies. Honey..if you are to believe in Jesus and are infact celebrating his supposed birth, then what goes with that is spirit communication from The Big G himself,Jesus resurrection, and his flying off to the heavenly realms not to mention the spiritual healing, miracles at a drop of a hat and so on. If you celebrate this guys birth in any shape or form then you also have belief in the other events that-took place. Regardless whether on 25th of December or not, if you believe he existed,he was born etc then the rest follows suit..and hey presto that would make you a hypocritical believer! If you do not believe in J himself but quite willing to accept the trappings etc that go with this day, then you are benefiting in some way or another from something based upon a religious belief..and you call mediums con merchants ;D As the great guy supposedly said himself "Before pointing out the splinter in another's eye, first remove the plank from thine own"

lol, not at all. I need little excuse to have a pop at the sceptics I can do that quite easily without the aid of a religous holiday to bring their hypocrisies to light
